When it comes to women’s wardrobe options, off body carry in a purse may be the only viable choice available.
For many women the gun purse can be the difference between having a gun and not having it. If you elect to go this route, there are some considerations.
First, don’t just dump the gun into your regular purse. The gun needs to be protected from lint, debris and other items; it’s not just a safety issue, but one of reliability as well. Just as when you carry a gun in your pocket, a gun in a purse can and will pick up all kinds of stuff that can compromise its function. Keeping the gun in separate part of the purse, where only it resides, will go a long way to keeping it clean and functional.
The gun needs to be in a holster, and that holster needs to be attached to the purse in some manner. Again, there is a parallel to pocket carry: A gun that’s not in a holster will move around and shift its position. When you need to get to the gun quickly it’s important that you know where it is and what direction it’s pointing in order to achieve an efficient grasp. A holster which attaches to the inside of the purse using Velcro® is a very good idea, and is a common feature of purses that are designed to conceal and secure a handgun.
The compartment in which the gun sits needs to be accessible from outside the purse. Drawing a gun from a purse takes enough time without opening the main compartment, finding the gun compartment, and finally finding the gun. It’s best to have the gun in a secure compartment that can be immediately accessed while the purse is on your shoulder. Gun purses usually have a zippered compartment with access from one end of the bag. It’s critical that you always carry the purse with that end oriented to allow you to get to the gun when you need it.
Many gun purses have a thin, steel cable embedded in the strap so that purse thieves can’t cut it and escape with both your pocketbook and gun. While there are detractors of this idea, I think it’s important to consider. Having a thief get away with both a weapon and your home address is a grave concern, not to mention the havoc he might wreak upon other victims. Part of being a responsible gun owner is doing everything you can to prevent your gun from falling into the wrong hands, and preventing your gun purse from being stolen is a good way to live up to that responsibility.
If you decide that purse carry is for you, I encourage you to buy the proper purse rather than pushing your current one into a service for which it was never intended.
Drawing from the purse
If you carry the purse on your shoulder the draw sequence is very similar to that of a shoulder holster, except that it’s easy to swing the purse forward to make it easier to reach.
