Chapter 32

By looking through the window of the house, Richard realized his chances of making it on foot were slim once he saw the throng of people. Next to him was Dr. Cho whom he learned was from South Korea’s Center for Disease Control, along with Dr. Saito the researcher from Kobe.

He had been very fortunate indeed that he had chosen that house in particular he soon discovered because they both knew a lot about the mysterious illness that had been spreading through the city.

“You mean that this was spread by people?” Richard said.

“Yes. We believe so,” said Dr. Saito. He was a short, serious man who spoke softly.

“It was made with modifications on the strain I had been studying,” said Dr. Cho, a livelier man whom Richard wouldn’t have minded getting a drink with. He didn’t seem to be a doctor at all—more like a smart engineer who liked to go hiking on weekends or something. But he had heard from Dr. Saito that he was one of South Korea’s top medical researchers.

“So why the hell are they all out there moving around like that? Shouldn’t they just be sick and coughing or something? I saw a man try to eat me today.”

“It’s been modified by someone to do great harm to the nervous system,” said Dr. Cho. “We’re not quite sure how it got that way. We haven’t even been able to get a sample.”

“Then how do you know it’s even related to the strain—as you call it—that you were doing research on?”

“Because I know the symptoms and I know that someone deliberately broke into my data files and stole my research years ago. And—” Dr. Cho looked at Dr. Saito as if deciding how much he could tell.

“Go on Dr. Cho, please. It may be classified information but the secret is out. The news in the free press will demand a full explanation eventually.”

“It’s a virus we believe—man made and modified based on a real strand that can cause people to attack each other.”

“Modified? The original sounds perfect. Why would anyone want to change it?”

“Because it’s much more contagious than the one I was studying and it is more likely to affect one’s system.”

“Then why were you studying it at all? Why not just get rid of it? It sounds like by keeping it around, you just doomed humanity.”

“It’s common practice for governments to control dangerous and infectious diseases,” said Dr. Saito.

“Why?”

“Because we need to study them in order to know how to combat them.”

“So who set this whole thing up then? Who were those guys on the ship?”

“I don’t know,” said Dr. Cho. “Honestly, they could be anyone.”

“But they weren’t terrorists and they had Chinese weapons. I saw them with my own eyes.”

“What you describe,” said Dr. Saito. “Sounds like either China or North Korea but that would be strange. They would never want to openly infect a civilian population with some kind of man-made disease.”

“I’m out of theories,” said Richard. “We’ll just have to figure out who it was later.
