Everyone scattered, intent on finding items for what had to be the strangest scavenger hunt in history. They were surprisingly effective, blowing through the floor with the destructive force of a small swarm of locusts while they tore through desks, storage bins and closets. Evidently, there was no going down with the ship here at The Con. Our little team of Zombie Hunters were proving to be enthusiastic and efficient thieves. I had no idea.
As soon as everyone else was busy hunting up possible weapons, I pulled Roxy off to the side. “I want to go check out the cameras again.”
I had an idea brewing but I needed to get a closer look at the stair wells.
She looked at me funny, but didn’t ask why I was being so sneaky about it. She just waited, not saying a thing until we were by ourselves. The door to the security room closed behind us and I locked it for a bit of privacy. Roxy cast a quick glance at the display screens then turned her back on them to look at me.
“Okay, what’s up?”
“Are you doing okay?
“I could ask you the same,” Roxy shrugged. “Why?”
“I know you aren’t happy about having to take the leadership role.”
“It is what it is,” Roxy said.
She frowned but didn’t fight me too hard when I put my arms around her. It didn’t last long but it didn’t need to. A hug was a hug and always appreciated, but when you’re trying to keep your emotions in check, a hug could become the pulled stopper that let loose a good cryfest. That was not in our best interest right now. Right now we had to be hard, especially around the guys. Guys never understood why a woman cried and had a tendency to think it was a sign of weakness. It didn’t matter that it was an erroneous assumption. Appearances were everything. Respect was everything. Respect and trust. We needed that to keep us all alive.
“That’s enough, now,” Roxy sniffed, then let me go after a quick peck on the cheek. “We’ve got things to do and no time to be mushy. We can relax when we get back home.”
“Well, until then you have me to back you up and obviously Bobby is on our side. Lauren, Paul, and Ann? They already look to you for answers, so that just leaves Jason…and Brandon.” I practically spit the last name out.
“You’re worried about Jason?” she asked, focusing on that last pause all too quickly.
I considered that question for a few seconds before answering. “Well, he’s known Brandon for a while, and we only just met him when we joined the Zombie Response Team. I don’t know how good of friends they are. He could be more loyal to Brandon than to us. I think if we had to choose between keeping both of them or letting them both go, I’d let Brandon walk. Jason’s a strong fighter, but Brandon is going to get someone killed eventually.”
Roxy looked at me, then chuckled.
