CHAPTER 6

Roni smoothed her hand down over her green silk shirt while she looked at her recruitment party invitation card.

She’d had a beast of a time steaming the shirt before the party, trying to get all the wrinkles out from its being packed. Because her family’s maid had always done her laundry, Roni had taken for granted being able to step into her walk-in closet—no problem—and pick whatever outfit she wanted to wear for the day. Now that she was here on her own, she was finding mastering the steamer a bit of a task. Sure, she’d scored high on her SATs, but she hadn’t known how close to hold the device to the garment without damaging it. She was determined to learn such domestic tasks, though. Normal human beings on Planet Earth didn’t have a maid to take care of them at every turn.

Recruitment Group 7 had met with Darcy and Tricia in the Strumann Student Center right before the parties started— Jenna had assured her the steaming job was “just fine”—to see what invitations they’d received and which parties they would attend. Roni was floored when her computer printout indicated that all ten houses asked her back for Round Two—Skit Night. It had been an extremely hard decision—one she had to make without consulting Jenna—but she’d gone with the following six choices:
