Zane wanted to skip into the firehouse. Hell, he could probably have done cartwheels he felt so good. The minute he walked through the door, though, his steps faltered. A deathly quiet had settled over the station—men stood in twos and threes whispering and shooting suspicious glances at him.

He saw James, his head bent with Mark and Bill. “James, what’s up? Why is everyone so sombre?”

“The arsonist, he’s one of ours,” Mark said.

“Who?” Zane asked.

“Shut up,” Bill said.

James stuffed his hands in his pockets, his mouth set in an angry line. “You shut up, Bill. You’re the one spreading rumours.”

“Just a minute… I saw two unmarked cars and, when we pulled up, Chief called Nick upstairs. Is it Nick?”

“Yeah, they think so,” Mark answered.

“Found loads of crap at his house,” Bill added.

Zane’s bowels clenched. Nick wasn’t the arsonist. Somehow they’d got their facts wrong. He turned and raced up the stairs, Bill’s voice carrying after him. Crap, someone had it in for them. Maybe one of the guys had found out they were gay.

The conference room door opened just as Zane topped the stairs. Nick stood with his head down, cuffs pinning his arms behind his back.

“Stop. You’ve got it all wrong.” Zane rushed into the room, breezing past Chief Miller.

“Zane, calm down,” Miller said.

“Chief, whatever they said Nick did, he didn’t.”

“Who is this?” One of the men in suits asked.

Nick glared at him and shook his head. Crap, what the hell had they done to his lover?

“Nick didn’t do anything. He didn’t have time,” Zane said.

“We’re booking him. I suggest you find him a lawyer.” The blond cop narrowed his eyes and looked Zane up and down like he, too, was guilty.

Zane locked eyes with Nick, and the desperation and anguish he saw there pulled at his heart. He couldn’t let Nick be booked. They’d promised to keep their relationship a secret no matter what, but that didn’t include being arrested for some crime Nick didn’t do.

“He was with me for the last two weeks. He didn’t have time to do anything,” Zane blurted out.

The detective held up his hand. “Tell it to the DA.”

Chief Miller stepped into the detective’s path. “Now wait a minute. Let’s hear what Zane has to say. The only reason you cuffed Nick is because he said he was at home on the fourteenth and his neighbours said he wasn’t. Let Zane speak.”

The two detectives looked at each other and shrugged. Zane knew he had to talk fast to get anyone to listen. He shut the door to the conference room and moved around the table, trying to find the right words to start with. Before nightfall, the news of him and Nick being bed-buddies would spread through the department.

“Officer?” Zane looked in question at the policemen.

“I’m Detective Long and he’s Detective Mason,” the blond one said.

“Detectives, Nick’s been staying at my place. Whatever date you think he did something, he was with me.”

“Any date?” Mason’s lips bent into a sneer.

“Yeah, the only time we’ve been apart is when he’s on the ambulance and I’m on the truck.
