AN ALARM BLARED in Bec’s ears and she rolled over, disorientated and exhausted. She opened her eyes, and she recognized she was in Joy’s bed, her memory of the night before coming back. Joy was rubbing her face, black hair swooping across her naked back as she sat up and silenced the alarm. Bec reached out, caressing Joy’s back with her fingertips.

Joy turned to her and grinned. “Come on.” She jumped out of the bed and stepped into her closet.

“You can be very bossy. Where are you going?” Bec asked as she pushed the blankets from her body and climbed out of the bed. She wrapped the top sheet around her to fight the chill in the room. Her bare feet padded across the tiled floors as she walked to the closet.

Joy was yanking on a pair of jeans, a sweater already over her torso. “We’re going to watch the sunrise. Get dressed.”

Bec obeyed, finding her clothing strewn around the room. When Joy emerged from the walk-in, Bec was pulling her socks on. “Where exactly are we watching the sunrise?”

Joy was already walking down the hallway to the living room as she spoke, Bec on her tail. “There’s a little park I have to show you. I’ll explain on the way.”

Joy hardly explained on the car ride to the uptown park, but Bec simply basked in the afterglow of their incredible night together. Joy parked by the curb, paying for the meter with her phone before heading up a tall concrete staircase. Bec ambled behind her, pulling on her hat as the wind pushed on her. Joy stood at the top beneath a copse of evergreens. Pine needles showered them both in the breeze. Bec wrapped her arms around Joy from behind, resting her head against Joy’s back. Joy was looking toward the brightening sky to the east, the first rays of orange sun cresting over the mountains.

“Wow,” Bec murmured, taking in the beauty.

Joy sighed, crossing her arms overtop Bec’s around her torso. “I come out here every day to watch this, even when it’s raining or cloudy. It doesn’t disturb the beauty. This little park is a slice of serenity in the middle of the madness. In the early morning hours, it’s like I’ve been transported to a different world altogether. I love it here.”

They stood in a mutual silence, the sounds of the waking city increasing around them. Scattered voices from pedestrians coalescing with the sounds of traffic, a stray bark of a dog in the distance. “Is this the first sunrise of Yule?” Joy asked.

“No, it’s technically the second.”

“We’ll have to plan to watch it together next year. To watch the first streams of longer days and shorter nights like little tendrils in the sky together would be wonderful,” Joy whispered so quietly Bec thought maybe she imagined it.

“You are incredible,” Bec said. And I love you, she thought as she snuggled against the warmth of Joy’s coat, relishing in her scent and her verbal poetry.
