HOW I THRIVE
ANGELA SANTOMERO, television producer
Encourage someone you donât know well to tell you their story.
âMy favorite way to connect is to dig deeper and connect more to find out everyoneâs story. This has changed the way I view small talkâitâs to talk to fewer people in a deeper way. â
An apology is one of the most powerful ways to resolve, or at least address, a conflict. Apologizing to someone when weâve wronged them is essential to keeping the relationship intact, but itâs not always as simple as saying sorry. An effective apology is best done in person, Lauren Bloom, author of Art of the Apology: How, When, and Why to Give and Accept Apologies, told Thrive Global. But if a face-to-face conversation isnât possible, a phone call or video chat are great alternatives. While we have the other personâs attention, Bloom suggests taking responsibility for the harm we caused (âI shouldnât have done thatâ) and making amends as best as we can (âWhat can I do to fix it?â). It can also be helpful to express what we value about the other person, why they are a friend we want to keep. Then, one of the most vital ingredients to the apology isnât about the apology at all, itâs about your behavior moving forward. When we hear it, it sounds rather obvious, but itâs a step that many of us skip: Donât do the upsetting thing again. If itâs a behavior that feels baked into your personality, you can intentionally take a Microstep to help you improve. For example, people who are chronically late can set plans on their calendar for fifteen to twenty minutes earlier than they need to, essentially tricking themselves into being on time.
