Once up in his room, Charlie switched the kettle on, then sat at the desk and wrote up his notebook. Making particular notes of names and the links between them. By then it was just after nine, thinking it was not too late, he then rung C I Penney on his home phone and was surprised to hear Sam answer. “Is the Chief there?” he enquired. “Just coming now” she replied.

“Penney.” He snapped.

“Hi Chief doing a little entertaining.?”

“None of your business and unless I mention it, nobody else’s either.”

“Understood” said Charlie grinning to himself. “Just thought I’d bring you up to date with our chat with Reilly, hundred percent confirmed our victim is O’Dowd and even explained how he got those first two bullet wounds. Seems he was shot by either Taggart or English; they were both there so their killings were an obvious payback as well as covering his tracks and protecting the million or more dollars he had ripped off from the drug gangs”

“A million dollars was a lot thirty years ago somebody was going to be pretty angry at losing that, it explains how he managed to buy the business in Belfast though.” Replied Penney. “But could be another reason he was shot.”

“Contrary to what Sharpe said, it seems as if everyone we speak to wanted him dead,” Charlie continued, “No wonder he was so protective of his past. I am going to try and see O’Dowd’s sister in the morning and see if D S Cormack has anything on the other families, then we plan to get an afternoon flight back.

“See you tomorrow then” said Penney putting the phone down.

By now Charlie had to switch the kettle back on then after musing about Penney and Sam, he made himself a hot chocolate and set the alarm and prepared for bed. But not before he had picked up the phone again and rang Lucy. She answered almost immediately, “How’s the conference?” he asked,

“Typical talking shop,” she replied, “but there was one guy there who was interesting.”

“Should I be jealous?” He asked

“Being jealous would infer that you liked me.”

“You know I more than like you.” Replied Charlie

“Really,” Had Charlie been using facetime he would have seen Lucy blush.

“Yes, really and by the way I just rang Penney at home and Sam answered the phone.”

“Sam! The IT specialist,”

“Yep, and that’s not all, yesterday he came in the office in a new suit, pressed shirt and polished shoes.”

“Whoa” Lucy exclaimed, “That must have brought the place to a standstill.”

“Not half, but more importantly when am I going to get to see you?”

“Tomorrow evening if your back from Ireland.”

“Great but you may have to settle for a takeaway, don’t think I’ll have time to prepare anything.”

“As long as you are there that’ll do, get a good night’s sleep, you might not tomorrow. goodnight.”

This time it was Charlie who blushed, “Cheeky! Goodnight” he said, switching off his phone and checking the alarm, he climbed into bed, the thoughts of the case being replaced with thoughts of Lucy.
