CHAPTER TWENTY

Paterson sat bolt upright as the sound of the alarm reached his ears.

‘Fer fuck’s sake!’ Clocks shouted. ‘What the fuck’s ’appened? What’s ’e gone an’ done?’

‘Dunno,’ said Paterson, ‘but I’m betting that’s a signal for us. Let’s move it!’ He waved his hand forward.

Hutton gave the order for SWAT and her team to move in. ‘Nobody leaves the estate. Nobody!’ she barked into her radio. ‘Move it,’ she said to Clarke. ‘Get us in there. Now!’

Clarke gunned the big SUV and within a minute they were screaming through the gates amid scenes of chaos. SWAT vans were everywhere, light flashing, sirens blaring. People were running all over the place in panic — shame and fear driving them on to get away from the law. All of them were doomed to fail.

Paterson’s jaw tightened. ‘He’s taken control, John. He’s nobody’s fool. He’s thinking on his bloody feet and screw technology!’

As the car screeched to a halt outside the main entranceway, all five of them bailed out of the car and ran in. SWAT had the door covered and several were already inside, dragging people to the ground and none too gently.

Paterson looked around the room quickly. He felt a knot in his stomach. ‘John! Can you see him?’ He saw Lyndsey and Hutton barking orders and kicking legs out from under people. Clocks was busy pushing someone over, a man in a plain grey suit with hair to match. He must have made the mistake of not standing still when Clocks had ordered him to. Pulling out his cuffs, he turned to Paterson, recognising the urgency in his voice. ‘No,’ was all he had.

‘Leave him! SWAT will mop him up. With me, now.’

Paterson had spotted the little back room that Wallace had talked about. It was a big house — Wallace could be anywhere — but he fancied that back room.

Clocks looked down at the grey man. ‘Lucky you! My signature move is a severe kick in the bollocks. Now run along and give yerself up to the nice policeman over there, a bit lively.’ The man looked up at Clocks, a mixture of fear and anger on his face as he stared up the barrel of Clocks’s gun. ‘Go on, mate. Off you fuck.’ He pulled the man up by his lapel, hit him on the side of the face with the Glock and pushed him toward a SWAT man who grabbed him, threw him face down and cuffed him.

Paterson was moving now, pushing through the thinning crowd. As he reached the entrance to the room, he punched his gun forward, two-handed. Clocks joined him, flattened up against the wall. They went in, one high, one low. Nothing. They both saw the back door at the same time. Closed. Paterson whistled over a SWAT man with a shotgun and nodded towards the door. The SWAT man understood. He stepped forward, fired a Hatton round at the lock and stepped aside quickly as Paterson and Clocks entered.

‘Clear!’ shouted Paterson. SWAT man stepped in behind them as they found themselves at the mouth of a tunnel.
