CHAPTER 16

SAM PROPPED HIS FEET ON THE coffee table in his small apartment at Parker’s Boarding House. If he couldn’t get his cousin Audrey to come out and help with the clinic, at least until he found another vet to hire, Sam wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He still marveled at the idea that Cal Faulkner had been taking care of all the clinic’s clients for all these years. Of course, based on the clinic’s records, Cal had been working six days a week, twelve to thirteen hours a day, and he hadn’t had a vacation in fifteen years.

Sam didn’t want that kind of schedule. He also wanted a life—with Dana. He shrugged and popped the cap off his Corona, then proceeded to take a long swig, enjoying the chill of the beverage coating his throat.

He’d really gotten himself into a pickle this time.

Maybe he should just sell his share of the clinic. He could offer it back to Ray, in case they wanted to keep it in the family. The thought of it left a bad feeling in his gut, but what was he supposed to do? He’d only done this in hopes that he and Dana would reunite. But now, Sam knew he had to accept it—Dana would never be his again. She didn’t trust him. And Sam didn’t blame her.

His cell phone buzzed. He glanced at the display. Audrey.

He smiled as he connected the call and said, “Hey, cuz...tell me you’re rethinking my offer?”

“Well, I’m not exactly keen about uprooting myself. I like it here.”

“Okay.” He couldn’t find fault with her for that. “So what’s up? Everybody okay?”

“Everybody’s fine, Sam.” Her voice was tense. She had been cornered. “Look, this is not going to be a permanent change. I’m telling you that, just like I told Mom and Uncle Robert.”

Sam grinned. “They called you?” he asked of his dad and his father’s sister.

“Of course they called me,” she said amid her frustration. “Right after your mom told your dad, who then told my mom that you were in over your head. They both called me...on a conference call. Sam, do you know what it’s like to be on a conference call with your dad and my mom?”

No, he didn’t, not really. And just the thought of it made him glad of that. “Look,” Sam said, “I’m really sorry, but I could really use your help...at least until I can find another vet to bring in.”

“Six months. Dan is giving me six months’ leave,” she said of her boss. “And I really have to come home after that.” There was an edginess in her voice, and Sam knew why. Drew Ellison. Sam hated that guy. He’d been stringing Audrey along for ten years now. Maybe this was just the break she needed.

“When are you coming?” he asked.

“Sunday,” she said. “I’ll see you Sunday. You’d better find me a house to rent or something. I’m not living out of a suitcase for six months.”

Sam chuckled. “Thanks, Audrey.
