Chapter 4

Ulissa scrambled up the tree, wanting to get this over with fast. Last time she had climbed a tree, it hadn’t ended well for them. This time, she scanned the branches for shrike nests before climbing higher. The way was thankfully clear of all birds of any sort. Ulissa scaled as fast as she could. It was a tall tree, one that helped form the thick canopy of the forest, and should be lofty enough for her to see which way to go.

Little by little, the branches widened until she found herself in the main hub. She climbed higher to where the branches began to get smaller again. As they began dwindling, Ulissa saw the burst of sunshine that meant she was close to the top. She ascended higher still, for once glad she was small, because she could make it into the tops of the smallest branches.

Her head broke through, and she blinked in the sunlight, trying to adjust to the brightness of the day. Then, when she looked around, she gasped.

There was an absolutely huge tree not too far away. It was as thick around as about ten ordinary trees, and the ordinary trees weren’t exactly small. It broke through the canopy and soared into the air. She wondered why she hadn’t seen it before with her drones and knew she had to get to it now.

Ulissa took the compass out of her bag and marked the tree’s position. She should be able to find it, even if she was a little bit off, because of its massive size. Ulissa sensed that if she could get to that tree, everything would turn out all right. She didn’t know how she knew that; it was just a feeling in the pit of her stomach.

She descended slower than she had climbed. Yaliana was where she had left her, thankfully, looking alert and ready for action, as always. Ulissa wondered if knights realized they looked like they always knew what they were doing. They moved with such decisiveness that it always seemed like they were in charge. It was part of what Ulissa liked about them, and Yaliana specifically.

“There’s a huge tree over there,” Ulissa said, pointing in the general direction. “We need to get there. I think I’ll be able to see everything from the top of it.”

“You didn’t see everything from this one?” asked Yaliana, sounding disappointed.

“No, besides the sky, sun, and the seemingly endless canopy of the forest, the only thing I could see was the big tree.”

“How far is it?” asked Yaliana, sounding skeptical.

“Not too far. I promise we’ll be able to find our way once I get up that tree.”

“Okay, if you think we’ll be able to find our way.”

With Yaliana’s agreement, Ulissa began using the vine pulley system she’d set up to lower Yaliana to the ground. Afterward, they set out in silence, Ulissa checking the compass to make sure they remained on course.

They didn’t run into any animals, which made her somewhat suspicious.
