Le Page was loading the images from his digital camera onto Henriâs office computer. âIt was the woman?â
âYes.â
âNow that you have heard her a second time, did you recognise her voice?â
âNo.â
âYouâre certain it was not Danielle.â
âPositive,â Furneaux said.
His control brittle after the dayâs debacles, Le Page tried some slow breathing, tried telling himself things werenât all bad. Theyâd lost the bonds, but now looked like getting them back. The Turkish widow had called his bluffâphoned her sons to come and turf him outâbut heâd had the sense not to pull his gun or his knife. Heâd lost the man with the clipboard, but had his photograph. And heâd learned who owned the house with the white door.
He leaned over the desk and reached past Henri to scroll through the images. âThis is the house. According to a neighbour, it belongs to a man named Edward Oberin.â
âOberin, Oberin. Iâve heard of him,â Henri said, âbut Iâd always thought he was a fence, a back room kind of guy.â
âHere we have Danielle knocking on his door. Some time later, this man appeared.â
Le Page operated the zoom function until the face filled the screen, a dark force in the room. âI have no idea who that is,â Henri said, flinching a little.
Le Page grunted. âYou can put together one hundred and twenty thousand dollars?â
âYes, butââ
âTomorrow morning you will gather this amount and wait for instructions.â
âChrist, weâre not paying, are we?â
âWe need to get close,â snarled Le Page, âif we want the bonds and the money.â
Henri Furneauxâs courage had been ebbing all day. Now it came creeping back. âOkay.â
âSorry, sorry,â Joe said, barging in and looking hot and bothered. Seeing Le Page there he blanched and retreated. âSorry. Iâll come back.â
Le Page grabbed his wrist and yanked on it. âSorry for what?â
Joe swallowed. âI think Danielleâs done a runner.â
Le Page didnât care about that. He pointed at the monitor screen. âDo you know this man?â
Joe peered, recoiled. âJesus, thatâs Wyatt.â
âWho is Wyatt?â
Joseph launched into a nervy explanation but, at the end of it, all Le Page had was a name and the configurations of a myth.
