My ploy worked, and I found a bed at the very end of a relatively empty room full of bunks. Clearly, most recruits preferred to stay together, and I sneaked away from Moka and Jes as soon as they went to investigate another room that they spotted other new recruits entering. The East Bunkhouse had plenty of rooms full of beds, just off the large cave.
I flopped down on the bed and put the pillow on top of the blankets to stake my claim. The room was long and carved from stone, but holes in the ceiling ventilated it well and kept out the worst of the humidity. I stared at them as the oil lanterns on the center table flickered, casting light on the windowless space.
I was away from Moka and Jes. Taking off the black bandanna, I put my hands behind my back and settled into the down that must fill the mattress.
Down.
Of course, pirates would enjoy the comforts they plundered from noblesâ ships. And Islanda Nylar had shown me the hold they had on the sea. It was another noble system, only on ships and ruled by the sword.
Jes and Moka didnât find me, but a servant ringing a bell outside the door told me that dinner had arrived. And I was hungry.
The two met me outside, though, as other recruits, a few still with maps under their arms, headed to the stairwells on the dark end of the East Bunkhouse cave.
âWhere were you?â Moka asked. âWe claimed our beds, and now we canât move.â
âSleeping,â I lied. âI passed out, and Iâm sorry.â
âWe need to stay together,â Moka said. âItâs safest that way.â
Did she want my protection? Protection was not the thing that I gave to common people.
But then again, I had asked Moka and Jes to show me how to get here, and I owed them my presence for dinner. We made our way to the dining hall, and dinner was just as amazing as our meal earlier had been. The hunger in my gut stopped yelling at me, and Moka talked mostly about how I had knocked Pecha over on the beach.
âA wave helped,â I admitted. The less useful she saw me, the better.
âSometimes luck is on our side,â Jes said. âYou take what you get.â
I shuddered, thinking of Vulgan, but I didnât see him anywhere in the dining hall. It was just us recruits tonight. Even Beezi had vanished, and a new set of servants dealt with the morons snatching trays and throwing food.
âIs something bothering you?â Moka asked.
I wanted to dive into her friendship. âNo. I almost died today, but didnât we all?â
Then she laughed. âAnd you still have the pirate kingâs son to deal with. I forgot.â
Iâd take the out. Moka and Jes had both stood there as Kale offered to train me. âYes. I wonder when heâs going to find me.â
âNow,â Kale said behind my back. âI am to train you as soon as you finish stuffing your face.
