CHAPTER 24

CAMPBELL

“Never thought I'd see the day you come in, asking for a job.” My cousin Ryat walks to the mini fridge in the corner of his job-site office and pulls out two Cokes, offering me one before taking a seat again. “Last time I offered you work, you were a shit-head punk who was more than happy to continue on with your self-destructive path.”

I shift uncomfortably in my seat. “That was a few years ago. Things change.”

He nods, looking at me contemplatively. “I figure there are only two reasons that would have a man changing his ways. They've hit rock bottom . . . or met a woman.” My eyes drift to the side of his head to look out the little window behind him, thinking about how cute she looked in her purple scrubs when I dropped her off at work this morning. “Since you don't look like you're dwelling at the bottom, I'm going to go with it being a woman.” My eyes flick back to his, and my lips twitch at his perceptiveness. He's only five years older than me, but he's had his life together for a long time and has always been more mature. “What's her name?”

I clear my throat, finally opening my can of Coke and taking a sip before answering him. “Jasmine. She . . . she's great.”

“I believe that,” he says with a small smirk.

Leaning forward, I place my Coke on the desk. “So, you got anything for me?”

“You fit? Strong?”

I shrug. “I do weights at home almost every day.”

He steeples his hands together in front of his chin for a moment, just staring at me, before dropping them and smiling. “Of course, I've got a job for you. You're family.”

Relief travels through me, releasing the tension in my shoulders. “Yeah?”

“Of course.”

“Thank you,” I breathe out.

“But if you start fucking up again,” he adds, more seriously. “There's only so many chances I'm willing to give.”

My hand starts tapping a restless beat on my thigh under his desk. “I understand. I don't want to let anyone down.”

“Good. Let me look things over and find out which site needs the most help, probably this one. We'll get the paperwork and shit sorted out on your first day.”

“Thanks, man. I appreciate it.”

He nods, leaning back in his chair and resting his hands behind his head. “We should do dinner soon. Catch up a bit somewhere away from work. And you can bring your girl. I'd love to meet the woman who's encouraged this change.”

As much as the thought of it makes me feel uncomfortable, I nod my head. “Sure.”

“Great,” he replies, getting to his feet. “I'll book something right away. Where do you usually take her? What does she like?” he asks and then quirks a brow at me when I just stare blankly at him. “Tell me you don't just keep her at home to fuck.”

Internally I wince, even as I think about every which way I've had her over the past eleven days.
