Chapter Eleven

She didn’t mean to eavesdrop.

Julia passed by John’s room on the way to her room. Whispered words, half groans, caught her attention and drew her closer to the door. At first she thought he was talking to someone. The one-sided conversation held a desperate tone. Her curiosity piqued. Who could he be talking to?

J.J. was in bed asleep. John didn’t like Bob or his wife, and Sylvia was downstairs sewing. Perhaps he was on the phone. But who could he possibly be talking to at this late hour?

She pressed her ear to the door, hating herself for invading his privacy. What sort of woman was she turning into? She never would have listened in on Jack.

John’s voice was hoarse with emotion. “Don’t have a family. Don’t have anything. Don’t hurt Julia. I’m not Jack. I can’t be Jack.”

Julia had heard enough. She no longer cared if listening at doors was wrong. John was talking to someone about her. He knew he wasn’t Jack. He was pretending to be her husband in disguise. It sickened her to think of John as anything but good. Still, she had to believe her own ears.

She pushed open the door, ready to give him hell, but another shock awaited her.

He was asleep. Sprawled across the bed in jeans and a T-shirt, John clutched the bedsheets in tight fists. He writhed like one tormented by invisible demons. A thin sheet of perspiration covered his golden skin. He twisted in the grasp of some unknown evil and cried out, “¡Madre de dios! ¿Donde esta mi esposa?”

Where is my wife? Jack didn’t know Spanish. If she’d had any doubts about this man’s identity, they had been banished. In his sleep, in his subconscious, John knew he wasn’t her husband. But he had stated he had no family. How could he have a wife and not have a wife at the same time?

Tears welled up in her eyes. Some might say she was the queen of denial, but she couldn’t put a good spin on this one to save her life. Deep in her heart she had wanted—no, she had needed—him to be Jack. Part of her had even believed he was her dead husband, despite her claims that he wasn’t.

What was she going to do now?

Would John remember his dreams? It was possible that John would wake up with his memory intact.

What if he didn’t? Would she be able to tell him the truth?

John rasped, “Got to save her…what do I do? Car tailing me. Gaining on me. Gonna hit me. Scarecrow…I know who the Scarecrow is.”

She leaned closer and asked in a soft voice, “Did the Scarecrow run your car off the road?”

He hesitated. “Don’t know. Headlights blinded me. Can’t see. Car hit me…behind. Forced me off road. What do I do? Can’t die. Gotta save her. Blood. So much blood. Too dark. I hear him coming.”

“Who’s coming, John?”

“Scarecrow…going to kill me.”

Her hands went to his face, smoothing back the damp hair. She wished she could crawl into his dreams and save him from the phantom killer.
