Chapter Eight
After the New Year rolled on by, I buckled down and concentrated on my studies. In a couple more months school would end, there would be graduation and then college for those who chose to continue on with their education. I’d sent off a couple of applications for schools within the state. It wasn’t feasible for me to go far from home and as it was, it looked like I was going to have to get a part-time job to help carry me through. The student loan that I qualified for was a mere pittance to what I would need to live.
Curt’s parents had money. I hadn’t know this when we’d first met. It wasn’t until two months into our relationship that he’d brought me to his house one weekend when they were away in Spain on vacation.
The house was a mini mansion and Curt’s bedroom was as big as our living room at home. The indoor pool was awesome and don’t get me started on the hot tub.
It was early June when the subject of college came up between us. We were at my house studying for final exams when Curt pulled out a letter from his bag. “I’ve been accepted to a school in California.” He handed me the piece of folded paper and after my initial shock wore off from his revelation, I read it slowly taking in each word carefully.
“I guess congratulations are in order,” I said. I’d planned on staying in the state. Did this mean we were breaking up? With him heading to the other coast, that’s how it seemed.
“My parents are thrilled. I’m staying with my uncle on my Mom’s side. He’s got a huge house out there and said he’d be more than happy to have company.”
“I’m happy for you.” I did my best to remain upbeat. I swallowed hard and handed him back the paper.
“We’ll still be together if that’s what’s worrying you,” Curt said. “This isn’t the end of us.”
“And we’ll see each other during the holidays and keep in touch through phone calls and instant messages, right?” There was a sarcastic tone in my response to him. “Oh and text messages.”
Curt raised one brow and paused for a moment. “It’s a great school and I can’t pass on it.”
“I wasn’t asking you to. I’m just being realistic here. You’ll head out to California, get new friends and most likely meet someone else.”
“No one can predict the future,” Curt added. “It’s whatever we make it.” He reached for my hand and squeezed it. “Tell me you’re okay with this.”
“I’m okay with it,” I lied. In my mind, I knew we were over. Sure, we’d continue to be together until he left, but once he stepped on that plane, it would be the end of us.
****
Graduation came and went. Afterwards there was the usual celebratory dance, but I decided along with Curt to not attend since we couldn’t officially attend as a couple such as we were.
Since our discussion about him going to California, things hadn’t been the same between us.
