Sean placed coffee on the table and Dale took some gratefully. It was just the two of them—Jake was in a room with Emily Bullen and two representatives from the DA’s office. The offices seemed empty without Manny running around keeping everything in check.
“You think he’ll ever feel Josh is safe enough for them to come back?” Dale asked.
“Manny, you mean? Hell if I know. Maybe once the Senator is down and his brother is in with him and Emily has done her deals, then yeah. Who would want Josh dead after all that? I know Jake misses having Manny around.”
Dale sipped at the hot coffee and considered how to phrase the next question. In the end he just blurted it out.
“So you were what, a double agent, triple agent? What?”
Sean huffed a laugh and leaned back in his chair. He winced and rotated his shoulder a little and Dale recalled that was where he’d been shot.
“I was playing so many sides I kind of lost the plot. I’m just thankful that Owen Reynolds could tell Jake that I wasn’t actually the bad guy.”
“So, Kayden was saying, you and Jake…” Dale deliberately left the sentence hanging.
“Me and Jake what?” Sean said and raised his eyebrow in question. Then he grinned. “I’m teasing you. Christmas was eventful, and we reconnected. I hear you have some reconnecting of your own to do. With your SEAL.”
“He’s on leave for a while. I’m making the most of it,” Dale said.
“As much sex as you can manage? That should keep you going.” Sean wasn’t making a comment to force Dale to think, nevertheless that is what Dale did. He considered the words and recalled Joseph’s face with the gun at his head. He’d tried so damn hard not to look at his lover—if Griffin had any hint of what Joseph meant to Dale then that would have been leverage he wouldn’t have hesitated to use. But to see him from the window of the plane, falling to his knees, looking vulnerable? It had been hard not to just shoot Griffin through the head and hope he didn’t reflexively injure Joseph.
“It’s not just sex,” Dale blurted out. Sean had a surprised look on his face and Dale realized he’d been on the road past emphatic and on the way to defensive. “Sorry.”
“That’s good to hear,” Sean said patiently. “And no worries. In our line of work it’s hard to find someone you connect with. Some of us are just very lucky.” The door swung open violently and Jake stalked in with temper etched in his features. Sean stood up and shut the door then joined Jake, who stood at the window staring down at the street below.
“Fucking lawyers,” Jake swore. “I almost lose a man and they’re trying to bargain their way out of it. Damn DA is sitting there like he holds all the cards but damn it, her lawyer probably does.”
Sean placed a hand on Jake’s arm. “Tell us what happened.
