Chapter Six

The forest of the Immortals' Realm was thick and overgrown; Daniel had never seen a forest so old. The trees were easily a hundred feet tall, and some were so wide, he couldn't get his arms halfway around their trunks. Moss, shrubs, and ground brush covered the forest floor on either side of the worn path. Squirrels, rabbits, and other wildlife ran freely, without fear of hellspawn or hunters.

They camped near the trail each night and continued their trek each morning. The forest was so vast that by the third day, they still were not halfway through it.

They ran into trouble when they reached the river that ran through the realm. It was so swollen with rain that it had flooded its banks—and the bridge that crossed it. Liam and Daniel were forced to hike along the bank, hoping to find a second bridge or a shallower spot to forge.

*~*~*

"I got sent to the palace at eighteen, when I graduated." Liam had been telling his life's story, and Daniel felt the need to contribute a little something about his own life.

"You were a full sorc at eighteen?" Many sorcs were in their late twenties before they considered themselves to be fully trained.

"I studied for twelve years; I started earlier than most." He shrugged. "The magic came easily to me."

Liam hmm'd interestedly, encouraging Daniel to continue. As usual, Daniel didn't realize how impressive his feats really were. He lacked self-esteem, Liam decided.

"They sent me to the palace to work for the king. I was always good with communication magic—and we know why," he added the last bit wryly. "I developed a new communication system to connect the troops with their commanders and their commanders with the king. I developed the communication system that linked the towns together, particularly villages on the outer rims of fiefs and other lords' domains."

Liam nodded. "I've heard about those. They're like the stone you wear, only spelled so that non-magic folk can use them."

"I figured it wasn't fair to leave a village to the wolves just because they didn't have a sorcerer to run a spell for them."

"Sounds decent of you."

Daniel laughed. "Yes, well. I did other things too, lending my power to larger scale spells that were keeping the castle in working order. I did a little bit of teaching, but that didn't last long."

"Why not? Too impatient?" Liam's eyes and smile were teasing; he himself was incredibly impatient, always going somewhere or doing something.

"Not hardly. They could tell I was different; it made them uneasy."

"Different other than your monochrome wardrobe and aversion to sex?"

Daniel snorted. "Yeah. They could tell my magic was different. When we worked together, whenever I work with another sorcerer, they can feel that my magic is different from theirs, Otherworldly, and it puts them on edge, makes them nervous. That's why I avoid the other sorcerers on campaign. It makes them more comfortable."

Liam raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like the other sorcs are a bunch of pussies. So your magic is different—big deal.
