Mitch woke up in the wee hours of the morning with a beautiful woman in his arms.

Just like yesterday morning, they had to hurry. There was no Pinkerton Agency in Denver, and he decided it was probably no use to look in Omaha. So it was on to Chicago. He was up and dressed before she started moving. He got things packed while she pulled on her dress. He had to tie the fancy bows on the boots he’d bought her. She didn’t know how.

Mitch had ordered a carriage to take them to the train station, and it was waiting for them.

He had managed to find a private train car that wasn’t in use. Now that he wasn’t trying to hide his identity, he found plenty of people he could call on for favors. And he’d found that the Panic had made a lot of things very cheap. It was easy to find cars like this one for sale for pennies on the dollar as wealthy owners went bankrupt, and creditors sold everything to try to regain their losses.

It made it simple to travel in comfort.

Ilsa’s eyes went wide as he guided her into the car. “This isn’t like the train we rode to Denver.”

It most surely was not. It struck Mitch then that he hoped very much to make his wife happy. And to do that, he’d spent a great deal of money. Fortunately, he’d brought a fine supply of his gold along. Now he stood eagerly, like a boy hoping to impress his sweetheart.

He thought of all the women who’d cast out lures to him back in New York. Even more, he thought of the times a woman had attempted to compromise herself in some way to trap him into marriage.

He’d ignored the lures and escaped the traps, and he hadn’t cared much who was outraged or insulted. And now here he was, trapped into marriage by a woman who wouldn’t know a feminine lure if it bit her. And he didn’t mind being trapped at all.

Well, not much.

“We’ll be traveling day and night for a while, so I didn’t want us to be stuck sitting up. There is a bedroom in this car and more comfortable seating.”

“This is so beautiful.” Ilsa ran a hand over a settee with padded seats upholstered in blue velvet. It faced an armchair splashed with vivid blue flowers. A low table was set between the two. It was a far cry from the simple bench they’d ridden on before.

The doors and windows were trimmed with stained oak so shiny it glowed. The walls were papered in brocade cloth with a regal blue design against a white background. An oval mirror with a gilded frame hung next to a door between the bedroom and a small room that was set aside for a chamber pot. Beneath the mirror was a large glass washbasin, elaborately painted. In the basin rested a pitcher. It sat atop a white-painted chest, all carefully anchored so it wouldn’t slide or tip if the train ride got rough.
