With one hot hand over my mouth, and the other wrapped tightly around my waist, my attacker pulled me back against a hard wall of heat. A strong heartbeat pounded between my shoulder blades. The hand over my mouth covered nearly half my face, while the forearm around my waist was thicker than a tree branch.

Whoever this fucker was, he was big and strong.

“Don’t scream,” a voice rasped into my ear. “I won’t hurt you, but you better not scream. Nod yes if you understand.”

I was still for a moment, my racing mind trying to reconcile every clue this person gave me. Why did he smell and sound so familiar?

“I won’t ask you again, Nona,” he growled. “Do you understand?”

This asshole knew my fucking name?

I nodded slowly and the hands released me. I wasted no time in shifting and spinning around, teeth bared and snarling as I jumped and braced all four paws on a broad, human chest. He fell back with a grunt of surprise, but before my eyes could adjust to the darkness, he disappeared.

My nails clicked down on the hardwood floor. It was like he sank directly into the floorboards. I circled around, searching for a scent, but he left none. My hackles raised, ears pricked forward, whole body tense and alert, I walked through the apartment with my nose as my guide.

I must have walked a dozen circles through the six-hundred square foot space and only picked up a scent right where he attacked me. How could he just disappear? Was he a demon? And I couldn’t put my finger on the familiarity of his scent, but it kept gnawing at me.

Just when I gave up and sat on my haunches in the living room, something grabbed the scruff of my neck and tossed me violently to the floor. I snarled and twisted around, but he had caught me by surprise and had a good grip. My growl had the power to instill fear into other wolves, but this fucker would not let go.

He returned my growl with one of his own and that’s when recognition grabbed me harder than he ever had. I knew that growl. I dreamed of it. I missed it. I craved it.

I stopped struggling, my growls turning to high-pitched, pleading whimpers. When he released my scruff, I twisted around to look into a pair of endlessly dark eyes, surrounded by a long, slender snout, triangular ears, and fur as black as the darkness surrounding us.

Fur that should have belonged to a dead body.

“Blaze?”

I stared at him, open-mouthed and eyes wide in disbelief. I didn’t even realize that I shifted to human.

He shifted as well. Those eyes never changed, but the black wolf’s face morphed into that of a human man, one of the most handsome I’d ever laid eyes on. Black hair cropped close to his skull, the slightly longer length on top disheveled from the struggle. A straight nose, high cheekbones and a week’s worth of black stubble peppering a straight, angular jaw.
