Chapter 15

Squatting on the creek bank, Nate tossed a twig into the swiftly flowing creek. Koreth heard Garrett’s quiet footsteps behind him and warned Nate. Would have been nice to have these enhanced senses in Iraq, Nate thought to Koreth. Until Garrett’s soft voice intruded on his thoughts, Nate ignored him.

“I think we should talk.”

“Uh huh.” Nate snapped his wrist and watched another twig splash. “Have a sit.”

Garrett sat on the rock next to Nate, feet hanging inches above the flowing water.

After several minutes, Nate turned to look at him. “Something in particular on your mind?”

“How long have you known?”

“Found out yesterday when your buddies were chasing us.” Nate almost grinned at the discomfort he saw on his boss’ face.

“They weren’t my buddies, Nate.” Garrett wiped his face. “I left the clowder a long time ago, but if I had been there, I would have tried to stop the attack.”

Nate nodded. “I believe you.” He turned full-on to study his captain. “The question is, what will they do now. Do they know some of us survived?”

Garrett shook his head. “I honestly don’t know. Probably not. Martin wanted to remain tom to the Queen, so I don’t think he would have admitted to failure. He was pretty insistent on catching the girl before the clowder or the council found out she was alive.”

“So, they didn’t know the kids were alive, either.” Nate sighed. “Makes sense. If they had, they would have hunted them down, too.”

“Even though they are almost grown, they would have been no match for Martin and Franklin. Those two were combat experts. Their mistake was to take you for a normal person. They didn’t think even a cop would give them trouble. Their tactics would have been different had they known you are were.”

With a sigh, Nate glanced back at the brush-covered cave mouth. “We can’t stay here. Do you have any idea when the rest will show up?”

“It’s hard to say. I think they will wait for a while, waiting for Martin to call with the all-clear. Eventually, when he doesn’t, they will either send someone to check or come en masse.” Garrett cleared his throat. “Your vacation is up on Monday. You coming back to work?”

Nate sucked air through his teeth. “Not sure, yet. You off the entire weekend?”

Garrett nodded. “I have some time built up, though, if you want me to stay here and help.”

“Why? I mean, why did you offer allegiance? I wouldn’t have let them hurt you.”

“I know. It’s just . . . I’m tired of being alone, and I don’t want to be part of a clowder that would do what these cats have done. Too many years as a cop, I guess.”

“You’re too close to retirement to give that up, Garrett.”

“Maybe.”

Nate’s left thumb started tapping his knee. When he noticed Garrett watching it, he stopped. “Cats have trouble with jerky movements, too?”

“Yeah.” Garrett studied the creek bed for a moment, then grinned at Nate. “That trait always drove me mad.”

Nate laughed. “I thought so.
