Chapter 17

Eli walked back to the porch and took the steps two at a time. Just as he reached the top, he heard his pack cry out in startled tones. Whirling, he watched the wolves scramble away from the swirl of blue light flaring in the center of the pack. The light seemed to explode into brilliance. Thunder crashed. Some of the children screamed. The light quickly faded. The One True-Blood Royal Lycos stood at the center of the Arkansas Ozark Pack property, his back to Eli.

The were around him dropped to their knees, heads bowed. “Eli!” Lycos’ roar shook the leaves on the trees.

“Nate? How did you . . .?”

Lycos turned to face Eli, then shimmered into Nate. “We’ve got problems.”

“Problems?”

“There’s a Huntsmen squad on the way here for a kill hunt.”

Eli felt fear surge through his pack. He walked down the steps. “When will they get here?”

“They may already be here.”

Eli clapped his hands. At once everyone was quiet. Nate raised an eyebrow when the pack immediately turned to Eli.

“This is Nate, my foster brother, and the One True-Blood Royal Lycos. You all heard what he said. Sit and listen quietly while we determine what to do.” Eli turned toward the porch. “Old One?”

An elderly wolf hobbled down the steps and walked to the two Alphas. “Alpha?”

“Is there a safe place for the children?”

“The basement was originally built as a haven for the children.” He scratched his head. “It’s been used for . . . other purposes while Jackson was Alpha.” He shook his head. “Not sure it’s clean enough, right now.”

Eli nodded. He pointed to three of the men. “You, you, and you. Clean it. You have an hour.” The three men he appointed ran toward the side of the house. He glanced over the pack. “The pregnant women and those with small children, all the children, and the wolves without training will go there.”

He pointed to three more. “You will join the others as guards to those in the shelter.”

They nodded to him.

Eli turned to Snarl. “Since I don’t know your defense plans, suppose you tell me what they are.”

The old man shrugged. “Don’t have any. Jackson said he would defend the pack. He didn’t want anyone to be strong enough to defeat him, so he didn’t allow training.”

Eli blinked at Snarl. “None?”

“None.” Snarl shook his head. “He forced some of the bears to become Enforcers. After Jackson sent Dusty away, the bears, Jackson, and Sinclair were the only defense the pack had.”

When Nate sighed, Eli looked at him. Nate’s annoyance at the situation clearly matched Eli’s. Nate suddenly grinned. “Guess it’s up to you and me, little brother.”

Eli frowned. “I’m still older.”

Nate laughed. “And I’m still taller.”

The old man snickered. Eli shook his head and sent one of the kids to get the men he sent to clean the basement. If there were none who could help, the basement probably wouldn’t hold everyone, anyway. When they all returned, he faced the pack. “Sit.”

After they sat, he looked over the pack.
