Chapter Six

“Doc, our latest recruit ready to talk?”

I’d forgotten about the torn up rabid they’d brought in.

“Between the blood loss and his broken pelvis, he’s not in any shape for much.

At this point, I’m not even sure he can talk, much less if he will.”

One thing I’d noticed. None of the former rabids talked much. Hadn’t heard RK

say a word.

“What about those others?” Junior kept a respectful posture and voice, unlike his

early demands.

“They won’t know what he’s up to right now but they might give us some

insight,” Cowboy chimed in.

Hawk and Slade gave slight signals that might mean agreement. I’d noticed

before the subtle signals between Mace and his original team.

Mace gave a clear nod to Slade. “Let’s see who knows something of interest.” Slade stood and gestured to have the three former rabids brought up to kneel in

front of Mace. The darker skinned one got shoved forward first. He was the boldest of

the three.

“You have a name yet?”

The rabid glanced at his buddies? Sponsors? Guards? “Um, nothing stands out

yet,” was the hesitant reply from his sponsors. That sounded about better than guards. “Tell me about your former pack leader. What’s he want?”

Nameless snickered as if the answer should be obvious. “Food, sex, warmer or

cooler.” Mace growled and Nameless dropped the attitude. His gravely voice took on a

whiny, submissive sound. “Not talk like here. Tell us what do, where go.” Mace looked at the other two. “Anything to add to that? Like why he came

here?”

They shared a look. “Move all time, hunt food. Search new brothers. Women

good but hard to keep. Always look for more.”

“Brothers?”

“He call us brothers, not pack or rabid. Say we belong together, not kill each

other all time.”

“Only kill weak or ones not brothers. You not brothers?” That one sounded

confused.

Mace ignored the question. “So where’s he from and where’s he going?” “Ask him,” he pointed to RK. “He with first brothers long time. Not first brothers

but like most brothers.”

RK shrunk into as small a space as he could. All that attention freaked him out. “Let me get him.” I hoped Mace kept his jealousy in check or we might get to

watch RK having another seizure.

Kneeling on the edge of the dais, I spoke as soothingly as I could. “RK, it’s OK.

You can come up here and no one’s going to hurt you.” I glared around until those

closest moved back.

RK didn’t hesitate to follow me. Guess he really did trust me.

Mace pulled me back down next to him and set his arm possessively around my

shoulders. Pulled me so tight against him I almost tumbled into his lap. The shocker was RK’s low growl at Mace. “RK! Knock it off! Sit.” And he

dutifully sat at my feet. I looked from him to a snarling Mace and shook my head.

“Can’t you two play nice? RK, you’ve been with the brothers a long time?” He nodded.

“Any idea how long?”

Mace’s growl shoved my question aside. “Where are they from? Why are you

with them?”

RK looked to me and I nodded. “Answer his questions.”

Mace snarled at RK and me.
