Chapter 9 - Marlene

Celebrations in preparation for a wolf wedding typically lasted a week. There were dinners on the evenings leading up to the rehearsal dinner—which took place four days before the wedding—and then dinners every evening leading up to the wedding itself, which could go on for another week, depending on the status of the couple within the community. The dinners on the evenings before the rehearsal and between the wedding were hosted by different families for selected guests and didn’t mean the entire pack in one place at one time. Only the rehearsal dinner and the wedding itself brought everyone together into a throng. But the in-between dinners were no small affairs, and this evening would see the Main flooded with prominent pack members and their entire families. Eighty wolves, at least, were due to join the Nordens, Marlene was informed by the head housekeeper Nora.

Marlene had agreed to come for the pre-wedding celebrations but had insisted she could only commit to staying for the main evening of the wedding itself. She couldn’t get two or three weeks off from work. Of course, that wouldn’t save either her or Frank from a week of close scrutiny. Not by a long shot.

And the night before…

The last thing she needed, or either of them needed, was for things to get muddled between them. So why had it seemed like he was about to kiss her?

Her stomach fluttered alarmingly every time she thought about it, seeking his eyes over the breakfast table and watching him chat easily with Rick.

She was shocked at how accepting they all were of this Naguar in their midst. She thought that, perhaps, she’d underestimated them, especially her parents. She never would have thought they’d be this open but was increasingly glad that they were.

Her father was chewing loudly at the head of the table, slurping his orange juice with gusto, eating raw lamb mince—still his favorite, she observed—by the mouthful.

She’d never enjoyed the taste of raw meat. Not in human form, anyway. In wolf form, she could hunt with the best of them.

Her father caught her staring, fixing his eyes on hers, swallowing as though asking her what she was looking at, and she forced a smile to ease the immediate tension wafting off him. He wasn’t the kind of man who liked being questioned.

“Lamb,” she said.

He couldn’t resist giving her a smile back then, adding a nod in acquiescence.

It had been a joke between them when she was a kid, because he liked to call her ‘little lamb’ as a term of endearment. Now she felt the connotation of being meat for the grinder, something he could tend to but just as easily chew up, and she looked away from him. What would he think about her bringing a human into their den?

Her heartbeat quickened, and she got to her feet, excusing herself and leaving the room with a look at Frank to follow.
