I stood on a black dressing puff—not sure what else to call it—while the entire Stepford witches' clan goggled at me like I was a hot item on sale at Macy’s. I’d arrived an hour ago, and after useless small talk, they stuffed me with pastries and tea that was so sweet it was practically syrup and then yanked me up onto a puff.

I was in the same elegant room with lots of drapery and large, expensive Persian carpets, where they had held their little dinner party a few days ago. But now, instead of a room packed with witches and sexy waiters with their meat twinkies on display, it was just little me and the Sisters of the Circle.

When I woke up this morning, Marcus was gone. In place of the massive four-hundred-pound gorilla lying next to me was a note scribbled on my notepad.

Gone to check on the town. It’s complete madness.

I hadn’t understood his meaning entirely. But when I had made my way downstairs after a quick shower, I understood why.

A wolf was lying on the kitchen table, a deep gash across its middle, staining its light silver fur with bright red.

“What happened?” I asked as I rushed in.

As soon as I had entered the kitchen, Dolores had stood up and left without even a glance in my direction.

Hey, at least she was consistent.

Ruth had looked up, her hands stained with the wolf’s blood, holding a needle and thread. “Abby’s been in a fight. She came to us early this morning looking like this. Poor girl.”

I didn’t know Abby, but Ruth knew her well enough to recognize her as a wolf.

“But who would do this to her?” I asked.

“Looks like it was another wolf,” answered Beverly. She had dark circles under her pretty green eyes. “Probably wanted to mate with her, and she wanted nothing to do with that beast.”

“She’s the fifth shifter we’ve healed since this morning.” Ruth wiped her brow, leaving a long blood smear. “The town’s gone mad. They keep coming in, and we keep having to fix them.”

“It’s like they can’t control their beasts,” answered Beverly. “The wildness is slowly taking over. And it’ll only get worse the longer they stay in their animal forms.” She echoed what Iris had told me last night. “If we can’t find a counter-curse to break this curse, there’s no coming back from this.”

I shifted uneasily. “How is that going? I mean… did you figure something out? Are you closer to finding something to break the curse?”

The silence that followed was discouraging.

“Dolores is still working on a counter-curse,” Beverly finally said. “She believes she can break it.” But by the doubt in her voice, I didn’t think she believed it.

“How was Marcus with you?” asked Ruth, the concern in her tone and her face had my tension thumping in my veins.

“He’s fine. He left early this morning. Why?” I knew what she was asking. But so far, Marcus was just fine. He was still him. But for
