Chapter Eleven

Mike Cole was the next suspect on the list. Not only had he told Jane at the party that Jake deserved whatever he got for sleeping around but Jen had dropped his name too. It took them a short while to find him on the island.

With the fitness studio not open for business, all the employees were told to go home until Jen had decided what she was going to do. They swung by the fitness studio, a couple of staff members were watching the police do their work. After getting Mike Cole’s address they set off to find him.

They arrived at Willis Apartments on the east side of the island. It was a large apartment block that had recently gone through renovations. They were trying to improve the place and bring in a better clientele. Most of the ones that had lived there were known to be involved in drugs, prostitution and hold low-income jobs. It was a little off the beaten path so Jane hadn’t seen the place in a few years.

“Well, look at that.”

They had a brand-new sign that read: Willis Apartments: Because You Deserve Luxury.

“Yeah, have you not been out here?”

“Not in a while, but I don’t remember the sign saying that. The last time I came here someone had thrown a dirty diaper at it.”

He parked the car in front and they hopped out. They really had put a lot of effort into the place. It was beautifully landscaped with rolling hills and hundreds of flowers. They had planted several trees and formed the words Willis Apartments in one area completely out of flowers.

The place was always in the papers. The police were constantly being called out there for domestics and all manner of bad behavior.

When they entered the apartment block, both of them were pleasantly surprised to find the inside had also received a lot of love. The walls were now painted with a more modern color instead of the drab grey that seemed to suck the life out of you the moment you set eyes on it. The fluorescent lights were gone and in their place were pot lights and a chandelier in the main foyer.

“Welcome to Willis,” a lady said from behind a counter. She was dressed like she was working at Trump Tower in New York.

“You’ve done a nice job on the place. It’s different from what I remember.”

The woman glanced around at the place as if surveying her empire.

“It was time. But yes, I think management did a nice job. How can I help you?”

“Here to see Mike Cole.”

She tapped on a computer and brought up the apartment number. They took the elevator up. Inside the mirrors and buttons were gleaming. The smell of pine polish filled the air.

When they reached level four they located his apartment and Max gave a short knock on his door.

They could hear feet shuffling inside and then the door opened. He looked surprised to see them. He wasn’t wearing a top.

“The lady from the party.
