Chapter Thirteen

Ethan was transported to the local medical center to get him checked out and because there were no witnesses and no one was filing charges, Jane was free to go. Shaken up and disturbed by the whole event, she was going to return to the café for a stiff cup of coffee but she knew that it would just niggle her all day if she didn’t go see her mother.

When she arrived outside Lilly’s apartment block she noticed that her mother’s car was there but so was the car that she had seen along Clifton Road. Unsure if she should enter, she decided she would go in. She had nothing to fear. This was Crystal Cove, the island of witches, and she wasn’t going to back down from some ancient witch and blood-drinking lunatic.

She took the elevator up to her mother’s floor. When the doors on the elevator opened, she came face-to-face with Rachael Jennings. Both she and the vamp were looking down as the doors eased open. A big grin spread across Jennings’ face as Jane went to slip by them.

“The daughter returns. How nice to see you again.”

“I wish the feeling was mutual,” Jane said continuing on to her mother’s apartment. She watched them enter the elevator and not once did they take their eyes off her. Jane knocked on the door and when her mother opened it, she brushed past her and immediately broke into a rant about how she did not like being spied on. She demanded to know who these people were and why they were here.

“Good to see you too, Jane. Can I get you a cup of tea?”

“No, you can leave the island. That would be nice.”

Her mother chuckled. “You always were a jokester.”

“How would you know? You were only with me for the first few years of my life.”

Her mother winced. “Touchy.”

Everything her mother said or did just riled her up even more. What was it about her that got under Jane’s skin? She wanted to love her and get close but her mother always acted in such a way as to alienate her. Lilly went into the kitchen and put the kettle on. She was wearing a green dress and her hair was up as if she was about to attend a ball. She brought out three cups and placed them on a counter while she gathered together hot water, milk and sugar.

“Three? Are you expecting another guest?”

“Hello Jane,” a familiar voice came from behind her. She spun around to find her father doing up his belt and then his shirt. His hair was all over the place as if he had just awoken from a deep sleep.

“What are you doing here?”

“I invited him. We were catching up for old times’ sakes.”

“I bet you were.”

“Jane. Come on.”

“Don’t come on me. Do you know about Rachael Jennings and her sidekick vamp?”

“Yes. Joshua Church.”

“The Church family?”

She glanced over at Lilly who was stirring the tea. She brought all three cups over on a tray with milk and sugar.
