Chapter Ten

It’s amazing what is overlooked in a murder case. Police destroy evidence by mistake, people are not interviewed and testimony comes under a cloud of doubt. And often when someone’s career is on the line, a detective will rush to judgment in order to appease the general public. But is that justice?

As Jane left the station she felt her stomach doing flips. So much about this case felt as if it was out of her control. Anthony was on a rampage to pin the blame on someone, Ethan was on the island somewhere following someone who he thought was her. The probability of this all going south was high. The risk of being caught doing magic was forever at the forefront of her mind but she was determined to find out the truth.

On her way over to Mrs. Tuppermire’s home she took a short cut through the town hoping to avoid the main roads. Her cousins must have had the same idea as just as she was coming around a corner she caught sight of them in the distance heading her way. She knew Ethan wouldn’t be far behind. Frantic, she swerved into the parking lot of a clothing boutique. It was a new store that had opened up just a few weeks back. No one had seen the owner yet. She killed the engine and dashed inside hoping to leave once they had passed. She hadn’t paid any attention to the owner of the store who might be inside. She stood at the door peeking out.

“Can I help?”

Jane turned around to find herself face-to-face with the owner. She was a tall, wiry woman who looked as if she could have done with eating a burger or two.

“Oh, yes, actually you can. I was looking for evening wear for an event I have to attend.”

“What’s the event?”

“My wedding.”

“We don’t usually carry wedding gowns but you are in luck. We have a section in the back that caters to items that our international distributor sends us. You will have to excuse us, we are still unboxing a lot of product. By the way, my name’s Amelia Cranshaw and this is my son, David.”

Jane glanced over to the counter where a man stood stocking shelves. He didn’t look like the kind of man to working in a clothing store. He almost looked as if he had been stitched into the plaid shirt he was wearing. Six foot, buzzed hair, and a lot of muscle. He glanced over at her but didn’t smile. It gave her an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. Amelia herself was a strange-looking woman with tiny glasses but was built like an Amazonian warrior. If you closed yours eyes ever so slightly, you might have thought she was a man. She had hair that was cut short, a little bit too much facial hair for a woman, and yet her voice was clearly a female’s.

“Right, now where did I put that box of gowns? David, would you mind giving me a hand?”

Jane couldn’t take her eyes off him.
