Chapter Fourteen
Jane was beginning to miss Crystal Cove. The quietness, the faces of locals, and Max. She wanted to take a moment to phone him. She just needed to hear his voice. It was funny how you could get used to a small town and feel like a little fish in a big city. The city was beautiful but she could never move there. Too many people rushing around like chickens with their heads lopped off.
Instead of calling him, though, they decided to just get down to business.
Agatha and Jane waited outside the apartment of Martin Westbury. They could hear him moving around inside and then the door opened. As it did, they got a waft of marijuana.
“Hello again, how can I help you?”
“I wanted to know if I could get a moment of your time, I just had a few questions to ask.”
“Sure, come on in. Please excuse the mess, I am in the middle of renovating the apartment.”
“Replacing the carpet?”
“Yeah, it had a big stain on it. From cats. Do you have cats?”
She thought of Shadow. Mia was keeping an eye on her and on Jane’s pet fish while she was away.
“They can be a bit of a nightmare. I have one.”
“I wouldn’t be without my cats though. I love them to bits. Come on in, take a seat. Can I get you coffee? Tea?”
“Tea would be lovely.”
Jane didn’t really want tea but it would give them some extra time to snoop around a little.
“Can I use your bathroom?”
“Certainly, it’s just down the hall, the second door on the left. Be sure to push the handle down hard, otherwise it doesn’t flush well.”
“Got it.”
Jane eyed Agatha. She had a grin on her face. Jane strolled off toward the bathroom. Inside the bathroom, Jane locked the door and began looking through the medicine cabinet, underneath the sink, behind the toilet, even inside the toilet tank. The number of times she had seen people in movies stashing things in there was countless. However, this time she came across nothing. Everything looked normal. There was nothing that may have belonged to Sheila. She flushed the toilet and came out.
Martin was placing a tray with teacups and a teapot on the table when she rejoined them. Jane noticed two packets of cigarettes on the table. One was marked with a squiggly black line. She thought that was a little odd.
“As you live directly beside Sheila, I was wondering if you heard the gunshot?”
His eyes opened before he grimaced. “Unfortunately, no. I was out that evening.”
“Where?”
“At a bar with a friend.”
“Did you tell the police that?”
He smiled as he poured their tea. “What do we have here? Are you amateur sleuths?”
He’d been the first person to ever be so straight to the point. He didn’t seem fazed by the fact they were asking him about the murder. He even seemed to find it humorous.
“Something like that.”
“If you would like to check out my alibi, I was at the Blue Oyster between the time of nine and twelve.
