“SO, WHERE TO FROM HERE?” I asked once we were back in the car. I knew where I wanted to go. To the grocery store to stock up on food for Danny. Again, seeing someone hungry wasn’t my thing.

Orville looked at me. “You want to go shopping for Danny, don’t you?”

What could I say? My man knows me better than anyone else on earth. With the only possible exception to that being my sister Sapphire.

“I do.”

“Then why don’t we split up? That comment Danny made about how his dad may have been killed on purpose really has me bugged. I think I’d like to see the coroner’s records on that accident. I’m wondering if maybe there is something to that story.”

“Any particular reason?”

He hesitated. “Maybe, but I’m not sure I want to share it right off the bat. I could be totally off base.” He glanced over at my raised eyebrow. I really didn’t think that was how a true partnership worked. “Give me until tonight? The thought’s kind of, well, still forming at the moment. I’d like to do some digging before sharing it.”

I took a deep breath, then nodded. “Tonight then.”

Orville dropped me back off at the farmhouse to grab my car, and I went in to make a list of things that Danny could make use of without electricity. No refrigerator for keeping food cold and no oven to bake things in kind of hampered what I could buy the man.

Then I remembered the old-fashioned cast iron dutch oven I had at the shop. That would do for baking small items. All you had to do was cover the thing in hot coals for a bit. Worked a charm.

I picked up the dutch oven at the shop on my way to the store. Then I loaded down my cart with canned meat, bread, pasta, bottled water, and some ready to make biscuit mix. Anything I could think of that would make a half-decent meal and not have to be refrigerated. Turns out the selection was better than I would have guessed. Kind of led me to think most people didn’t actually cook these days.

Just open a can and go. We just might live a bit in the old days at the farmhouse. Not that I thought that was a bad thing. Give me homemade chicken and dumplings over something stuffed into a can any day of the week.

But in a pinch, to a hungry man, the canned stuff would do nicely.

I dropped the stuff off on Danny’s porch step without even seeing the man. Not that I didn’t feel him watching me the entire time. I did.

Something told me that Danny was keeping very close tabs on visitors to his property. And I was really starting to wonder if there was a very good reason for that. Just maybe he hadn’t shared all the details of the blog story.

Time for me to check out the Wind’s Crossing Rumor Blog for myself.

Time to take the investigation in a new direction.
