Chapter 19

Welcome In the North Country

I looked around at the rest of the Witch’s Brew gang. They all nodded, one by one—even Billy. It was settled, then.

"We’ve got our friendly competition!" I shouted. "Let’s go!"

We all—even Laurie—put our hands together in a circle and then raised them into the air all at once.

"Go team Spell and Shine!" Laurie said. "Even though…that’s just me!"

"Plus the employees you’re going to hire soon," I said. "Everyone’s going to want to work for you. Just wait."

"So what do we start with?" Billy said. "And how long does this competition go for?"

"Tomorrow’s Wednesday," I said. "So maybe just three days, through the end of the week? It’ll drum up business for both of us. As for the starting challenge…I’ll let Laurie choose, since she’s new in town."

"Cookies," she said. "Let’s start easy. Peanut butter cookies."

"Maybe we should do chocolate chip," Hugo said, "in case anyone has any peanut allergies."

We all turned to look at him. I would not have expected a Pumpkinhead to know about peanut allergies!

"We talked about it on the ship," he explained. "Since Cook can only really make one dish for every meal. He doesn’t want to make something that’ll kill anyone."

"Let’s do chocolate chip and peanut butter," I said. "That way everyone has something they can eat and PB lovers—like me—can get their fix. And there’s a chance for both of us to win, or for one café to take the crown!"

Laurie nodded. "Great."

I looked over at Billy. "Chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies," he said thoughtfully. "Simple, but effective. We can do that at the Brew. We can do that really well."

I’d never seen him get competitive before—and I liked it! This made me feel good about our chances.

"We’re going to win!" I howled.

Laurie shrugged. "Sure. But I think the Spell and Shine will give you a run for your money."

With our first competition on the docket for tomorrow, we all parted ways. Laurie, Billy and Hugo all went back to work to prep. Lulu went to the King’s Arms, and I headed to the covered market. I’d been putting off visiting my dad for too long. It was time.

I loaded up on groceries I knew he’d like—making sure to throw in a few bags of coffee beans as a subtle hint that he needed to get his butt out to the Witch’s Brew—and headed toward the forest. It was already getting dark by the time I got out of town, so I’d need to spend the night at Dad’s house in order to keep from groping around in the pitch-black woods on the way home. Hopefully he wouldn’t object.

When I got to his cottage, he was sitting out on a lounger in the front garden, soaking up the last of the sunlight. He smiled broadly when he saw me and got to his feet to help me with the grocery bags.

"Rosie!" he said. "What a surprise! I wasn’t expecting you to come by!"

"I should have called," I said, handing one of my heavy bags off to him.
