CHAPTER SEVEN
WILLOW
âHi, Daddy.â
âWhatâs going on Baby, are you alright?â
âCan you come help me move tomorrow? I know itâs short notice, but...â I pause, swallowing the large lump in my throat. âIâm driving back to my place. Iâm moving home.â
âWhat happened?â
I tell my dad everything that happened. I know heâs disappointed. He thought of James as the son he never had. He did a complete one-eighty. I think we all were surprised at what he did, but, I wonât stay with someone like that. Especially when a child is involved.
The drive home is long, about three and a half hours, so I decide to use my time to get things in order. Calling my realtor, I need to put the house on the market. Itâs a beautiful two-story home, and even if it were handicap accessible, there are no bedrooms on the main floor. I price it to sell fast, I donât care if we donât make money on it, I just donât want to have to worry about it. I call the bank and transfer half my savings and checking into a new account. Next on the list is to cancel all our joint credit cards. But the hardest call I have to make is to Kevin Martin attorney at law; Kaidenâs father. I can barely get through the call without sobbing, after all, I thought at one point he would be a father to me as well. Although he practices real estate law, he knows other lawyers in his practice that can take my case. I want this over and done before little peanut is born.
Itâs late by the time I get into town, and Iâm exhausted. I havenât eaten since lunch with Jenny, and Iâm starving. The night ahead is going to be daunting. Swinging by a local box store, they have apple boxes that I will need to pack some of my things in.
Pulling into my driveway, I stare at my beautiful house, knowing Iâll never live in it again.
Dragging in the boxes, I drop them on the kitchen floor, packing most of the kitchen, all my clothes, all the baby things, and Iâve tagged the furniture that I want to take.
Itâs almost midnight when thereâs a knock on my door. Who in the world would be at my door at midnight? My stomach twists, hoping itâs not Rita trying to change my mind about leaving.
Switching the porch light on, Iâm surprised to see my dad standing at my door. His eyes full of love and concern. He angles his head to the side giving me a weak smile. At that moment, all I want is for my daddy to hold me and tell me that everything will be all right. I hadnât expected him until morning. Unlocking the door, I open it to let him in, he pulls me into a big hug. It feels so good, I donât want to let go. Opening my eyes, I see Kaiden. He steps out from behind dad.
My breath hitches as my heart skips a beat at the sight of Kaiden.
