Chapter Thirteen

I woke up submerged in water. It looked like … like the pond from the goddess’s garden. A sky full of stars and a full moon rippled through the lens of the water.

What the hell?

I couldn’t move at all, only my eyes. There wasn’t any pain, and breathing didn’t seem to be relevant. I was lacking in any sensation.

“Hecate?” I could speak at least … under water.

“Hello, Jake.”

“I think you need to start talking. Am I dead?”

“You are on the fringes.”

“Shit.”

“I am working hard to try and let you live.”

I saw the flower that grew from the pond drop its petals onto the surface. With every fall, they sent clouds of white light into the pond. They swirled down at me, disappearing from my eye line as they came down.

“You are strong, Jake, to hold on. This is a testament to your desire to fight. But it may be a battle you cannot win.”

I wasn’t ready for this. “What happens if I die?”

“I will give you peace.”

There was so much left for me to do.

“Lilisian destroyed your body, ravaged your heart so that you suffered cardiac arrest, and sent you into the sea. You are so terribly broken.”

“Nice of her. What does the pond do?”

“It keeps you from death.” She sighed. “I could have eased the passing of Hercules this same way, if he had come to me.”

“Let’s try not to think about me passing on.”

“It is all I can think of. I have failed you.”

“No, you haven’t.”

“I could have been more to you than I was, Jake.”

“If it weren’t for you, there would’ve been no anything. At least we had a go. Wait, no. Let’s focus on doing more things, like getting to the mansion and having those answers we’ve wanted for so damn long.”

“Such need to fight.”

“You always tell me it’s a good thing.”

“It is.”

“We’re in this together, so take some of that need and put it into your work. I know I don’t know anything about how magic works, or how your power works. Who am I to say shit, eh? But I believe in you and this cause and the world. I don’t want it to fall, Hecate. I want my friends to have their lives back, for every resident of Coldharbour to have the same. And I want to see Dean again, to see that he’s really not her puppet anymore. If I die, then … then … I can’t answer that. All I can do is wait and see, right?”

“Yes, Jake.”

“Are my friends safe?”

“For now, yes. They have managed to recover your body from the sea. The chaos continued, but the goblins were spared. That unicorn-esque beast is a wonderful ally to have. Lilisian has destroyed all of Rainbow Mile now in her wrath. It is no more.”

Shit. “Where are they, my friends?”

“In hiding, damaged from the events that transpired.”

“What? They’re hurt?”

“By sadness. It was many hours before they could retrieve your body. You were almost torn apart by aquatic beasts. In fact, you have sustained further injuries from them.
