Thursday Afternoon

I flew straight to the agency headquarters and landed on Adam’s balcony. After shifting back into human form, I tapped on the sliding door. My heart beat rapidly, and I took deep breaths of the salty ocean breeze to slow my racing pulse. The archangel was on the phone at his desk, but when he caught sight of me behind the glass, he ended the call. The door slid open a moment later.

“How is she?” I asked as I stepped inside, shutting the door behind me.

“Thanks to you and Agent Munro’s quick work, she will live.”

“And her wing?”

Sighing, he moved back behind the desk but didn’t sit. His wings fluttered as he glanced down at his papers. “That is to be determined. They cut through bone with one of their Daggers. Time will tell if they fuse together again properly. Healing with magic can only do so much, even divine healing.”

I slumped into a chair even though it wasn’t offered, letting out a whoosh of breath. My hands trembled as the drain from shifting caught up to me, but I forced myself to draw the Dagger that might have disabled my guardian angel forever and set it on Adam’s desk. Only one more to go. “This is the one they used. What will happen to her if she can’t fly again?”

Adam glanced sharply at me even as he picked up the blade. “We do not discard our angels like trash, if that is your concern.”

I flinched at the harshness of his voice. Discarding was most definitely not what I meant, unless we were talking about Sophia, the reaper who cheated her way to angel wings. Then by all means. “No, I—”

“She will be brought back to full health and resume her healing duties.” He took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose with his free hand. “My apologies for my poor tone, Ms. Neill. Times have been difficult.”

“Why don’t you call your higher-ups for help? What about your god?”

“As with your own creators, the Almighty has given each of us a purpose and a fate.” Adam turned the knife over in his hands. “No amount of prayers will change that.”

“Okay, well, there must be angels above you who can bring in reinforcements, especially if they know these Daggers are involved.”

The archangel’s gaze met mine. “If I cannot keep my city safe, then I will be removed from my seat of power.”

I raised an eyebrow. “No offense, Adam, but I think you need to set your pride aside on this one. Surely we can argue on your behalf after this is all over if it means having backup now.”

“My replacement will not treat you as fairly or kindly as I have, Ms. Neill. And he or she will likely desire to have a much stronger presence in your life.” He dropped his gaze back to the Dagger. “The phoenix species needs to continue sooner rather than later.”

My body went numb with shock. Was he saying what I thought he was? And I thought hearing it from a vampire was bad.
