THE DOOR BETWEEN THE Hall and the Little Council room closed, and Owyn pounced on Aven and hugged him. “We did it!”

Aven laughed and wrapped his arms around Owyn. “Aria did it.”

“No, Owyn’s right,” Aria corrected. She walked around the table to the Heir’s seat and sat down. “We did it.”

Aven smiled and reached out, tugging Treesi into the hug. “I don’t think we could have if you weren’t so perfect, love.”

Aria smiled and looked around. Del had gone to the far side of the room, and was staring intently at the wall. She looked at the others, then got up and slowly walked over to join him.

“Del?” Del looked up at her. He wasn’t smiling, and his face was still too pale. She rested her hand on his shoulder, and he turned and threw his arms around her. “Oh, Del,” she murmured, and hugged him, bringing her wings in close to shield him from whatever was haunting him.

“You don’t have to go in there,” Owyn said from behind Aria. “I can do it.”

Del shook his head and stepped back far enough to raise his hands. “It’s not that.”

“Then what?” Aven asked. He came around Aria. “Del, what’s wrong?”

Del looked at them and swallowed. “I know what she was looking for. I think I know. And I’m not sure, but now I think it was the real reason she killed my mother.”

“Del!” Aria gasped. “What was it?”

“A fancy box. Like Danir said. I saw it. We saw it when we were in the tower. It was on a shelf up high. Too high for Mama to reach. I didn’t see what was in it. I don’t know if Mama knew what it was.”

“And that’s why you want to go in?” Owyn asked. “For answers?”

Del nodded.

There was a knock on the door, and Steward slipped into the room. His eyes widened when he saw them clustered around Del.

“Is something wrong?”

“Del might know what we’re looking for in the tower,” Owyn answered.

“What?” Steward came closer. “Del? Is there something that you didn’t tell me?”

“Only because I didn’t realize it was important,” Del answered. “I was six. How was I supposed to know it was important? It was when Risha took us to the top of the tower. I guess to the observatory Jehan mentioned. She was showing me how far you can see, and Mama was wandering. You know how she would flit from place to place. You called her a butterfly.”

Steward smiled. “I didn’t think you’d remember that.”

“She was doing that, and she found something. She got really excited. She said it was hers, and she wanted it. It was a box on a high shelf, and she couldn’t reach it. She kept pointing and saying it was hers, and when Risha wouldn’t get it for her, Mama said she was going to go and find someone to get it down.” Del stopped. “That’s when Risha pushed me.”

“Mother of us all,” Treesi breathed.

“And then you sealed the tower,” Owyn said. “And whatever it was got locked up inside where Risha couldn’t reach it.
