Chapter 17

“Your uncle?” Bridget asked, apparently shocked. “The same man we suspect murdered your mother?”

“And the others back in ‘88, as well as your newest victims,” Lucy told her as she stared at Johnny with her heart pounding from anger. “Chase knows about me!”

“And he knows where you live. He came after you, not Junie. We need to tell your dad. Now.” Johnny took out his phone. “He needs to get in on this search before your uncle comes after you again.”

“You can’t go home,” Bridget said, taking out her phone. “I can get you security—”

“Are you joking?” Lucy snapped. “I can take care of myself against an old man dying of cancer.”

Lucy’s phone beeped. She took it out of her pocket to see her dad’s text on the front. She opened her texting app.

<<Johnny texted me. What happened>>

Lucy looked over at her husband. “You’re fast.”

“Tell him.”

Anxiousness pushed at her thoughts in intense waves. While Lucy’s anger boiled inside of her, Johnny was afraid—not just for her, but for himself she was sure of it.

<<Results from fingerprints came back to Chase>>

<<Which prints?>>

<<From when that car tried to kill Junie>>

<< You mean from yesterday?>>

<<Yes>>

<<My brother knows where you live?>>

<<Seems that way>>

<<Where are you>>

<<@police department with Steve Bauer>>

<<Stay there. I’m coming>>

<<It’s not necessary, Dad>>

<<Don’t argue with me>>

Lucy gazed at Johnny. It would make him feel better knowing they had backup.

<<Sure. We’ll wait here>>

“Dad’s coming.”

Johnny exhaled loudly. “Good.” He scrubbed his hand over his mouth.

“He can escort you to a hotel,” Bridget said, pushing her hair over her shoulder.

Even the mention of her dad sent the FBI agent to hair-flipping. “We don’t need a hotel. Dad has three houses in LA. We can use one of those until we catch Chase.” Lucy paced to the door, then back to where Johnny stood. “Although I hate giving up our home for something as ridiculous as this.”

“Ridiculous?” Steve stood up. “He tried very hard to run you down. His car left deep grooves where his tires dug into your grass. It was miraculous that you weren’t killed.”

Lucy dropped her fisted hands to her sides. “But I know what to look for now, don’t I? I won’t let him sneak up on me again.”

“Why does he want to kill you, Lucy?” Bridget asked. She had her head tilted slightly, with her green eyes squinting, as if she was trying to piece together a puzzle.

“He hates her, obviously,” Johnny said, defending Lucy.

“But why?” Bridget stood up, holding out her phone. “I saw pictures of the way your uncle shredded your pink baby bag that Cooper left behind when he found you. Why was he so angry with you?”

Lucy felt Johnny’s anxiousness turn to anger. “I don’t know why. I was only a baby when he murdered my mother. He can’t know that I remember him doing it. That would be—”

“Insane?” Steve asked, breaking into her sentence.

Lucy blew out a fast breath. He was right. “Yes.”

“How could he know where you live?” Bridget asked. “And why wait until now?”

“I think I know,” Steve said.
