The common room is rammed, as usual â cake, scones and tea come out at four and by then everyone is ravenous after a day of lessons. I select a scone â no raisins, thank you very much â with butter, some of Creepy Billyâs homemade jam which is, quite frankly, amazing, and a cup of steaming hot Earl Grey tea. We join the others in what I already think of as âourâ seats and I notice that Coleâs plateful of Victoria sponge is rivalled only by Marcusâs. Thereâs a happy, crumb-filled silence and when Iâve inhaled my scone, I curl up on to the seat, satiated by the sugar. The shallow, white cup is between my hands, and I relish the heat seeping into my bones. I miss mugs, though.
âYou miss what?â Kat asks, between mouthfuls of lemon drizzle.
âEr, mugs.â I really did need to watch what I was saying aloud â how embarrassing. Mugs. I cringe inwardly.
âI get it,â Cole chimes in, delicately picking up his cup, the handle between his thumb and forefinger. âThese things have like a thimbleful of tea in them. Give me a chipped mug with a builderâs brew in it any day.â
âAgreed!â I laugh. I do like the Earl Grey better but he doesnât have to know that. âSo, whatâs everyone doing before dinner?â
A chorus of âprepâ goes up and Cole gives me a wry smile. Looks like weâll have company. We return our plates to the trolley and wander over to the library, the five of us talking quietly as we enter. The desk by my Bernini is empty and I make a beeline towards it, drop my bag as the others settle on the benches and head straight over to the circular central desk where the computers are.
âHow does this thing work, then, if thereâs no internet?â I swear I feel the whisper of a kiss on the back of my neck as Cole appears behind me and I almost full-on swoon.
âOh, there is internet, just not on these. You need to book internet time on one of the laptops, so it can be monitored. This is easy, though, you just type in your class and thereâs usually a list of recommended reading, like this.â I point to the screen where my modern history reading list is displayed. âI have a paper due on small-town legends. So I click here.â I press the screen and a title is highlighted by a blue bar. I repeat the process. âThen here and here,â two more blue bars, âthen hit submit.â
The small printer whirrs and spits out a square piece of paper. On top is my name, the date and time and the list of books Iâve requested.
âThen we take it to the librarian. Sheâs really good; she can usually recommend a couple of extras that arenât on the list, if you tell her what youâre doing.â I point at the screen. âYour turn.â
When both of us have paper slips we follow the curve
