CHAPTER 13

NAUGHTY SHYLA

NINA’S NEXT FEW weeks passed quickly, with many hours spent hacking Shyla around their neighbours’ farm, along quiet country lanes and through a nearby forest. Without fail, she always chose to ride bareback, since their paddocks were too wet to jump on after an early autumn storm, and she didn’t see the point in spending extra time saddling up.

“I can’t wait for the Wilson sisters to get back from hosting their Showtym Camps around the country. I’ve missed having their arena to ride on,” Nina confided to Lily. She shook her head. “I really don’t know what I was thinking entering both my ponies in the show, especially since it’s been so long since I had a jumping lesson. I hope I’m not going to be rushing between them the whole time!”

“You were thinking about your goals,” her sister reminded her. “But to make things easier I’d be happy to groom for you, in exchange for you helping me out the following weekend. Coping with two ponies on my own is stressful for me too.”

“Really? That would be perfect,” Nina said gratefully. “I’d love you to take videos of my ponies too, so I can watch them back and learn from them.”

“Deal!” Lily grinned.

Nina made sure to pack the day before the show and, to save time in the morning, also washed both mares and rugged them so they would stay clean. On the morning of the event, Nina had Shyla and Maybelline caught and waiting patiently at the float by the time Mum and Lily came out of the house.

In just ten minutes, the ponies were loaded and they set off on the forty-minute drive to the beachside equestrian venue in Ruakaka. Nina, bubbling over with excitement for the day ahead, chatted to her mum and sister all the way to the show, and was surprised how quickly the trip passed.

As Nina unloaded Shyla, she could feel the pony tense up.

“It’s OK,” Nina said reassuringly as the mare eyed the mismatched collection of trucks and trailers lining the parking area, as well as the countless people and horses that fluttered in between. “It’s a lot to take in, isn’t it, Shyla? But here comes Maybelline now. She’ll show you there’s nothing to worry about.” Sure enough, the older mare helped set the Brumby at ease and before long they were standing side by side, munching on their hay nets.

After running a brush over Shyla’s back, to make sure her coat was shining, Nina saddled her up in Rosie’s saddle. While Nina was getting into her riding clothes, Lily bridled Shyla and oiled her hooves.

“Are you ready?” Lily said, giving Nina a leg up.

Nina nodded, but her heart was suddenly in her mouth.

“Just relax, you two have got this!” Lily reassured her, following behind as they made their way to the ring to jump in the practice rounds. While ponies of Shyla’s height normally competed in the Category B division, with jumps up to 80 centimetres, Nina had
