CHAPTER TWELVE
After the cacophony of the parade, the streets of Chinatown seemed almost quiet now, despite the crowds of people. The acrid smell of sulfur still lingered in the air, a stinky reminder of the festive firecrackers.
Garrett looked down at Phoebe, smiling at the sight of her dark ringlets peeking out of the bottom of her knitted cap. With its ombré effect in shades of blue, the hat matched the scarf draped around her neck.
“I like your hat. And your scarf.”
She glanced up. “Thanks.” She touched the scarf with her gloved hand. “I made them. And my gloves.”
Surprised, he said, “They don’t look handmade.”
“I assume you meant that as a compliment,” she replied wryly.
He chuckled. “Yes, I meant it as a compliment.”
His hats, scarves, and sweaters came from a store. He knew nothing about knitting, except that old women liked to do it. And apparently young women too.
“Have you been knitting for a long time? Where did you learn?”
She bit her lip before saying, “I’ve been knitting for a few years. I learned after I moved back to Boise.”
He eyed Phoebe’s handmade scarf with interest. “That looks pretty intricate. How did you get so good, so fast?”
She shrugged. “It’s like any hobby. The more you do it, the better you get.”
Reaching out, he stroked his fingers over the folds of the scarf. “What kind of material is this?”
“Cotton chenille.”
“It’s soft.” He looked into her eyes as he brought his fingers to her cheek. “But not as soft as you are, petal.”
Pink tinted her face, and he smiled at her obvious embarrassment. She was just so adorable.
She tugged his fingers away from her face, but didn’t let go of his hand. They stood there staring at each other, their breath fogging the air.
“Maybe you can knit a sweater for me,” he suggested. “I like sweaters. You can never have too many.”
She blinked owlishly. “You want me to knit a sweater for you?”
“Yes,” he answered with an emphatic nod. “I like the idea of wearing something you made just for me. I would think of you every time I wore it.”
As he imagined her smooth fingers working those metal knitting tools, whatever the hell they were called, his cock twitched. He shook his head in disgust. He had to be only man on the planet who got turned on by knitting.
She dropped his hand as if it were a hot coal. “I’m not going to knit a sweater for you,” she snapped.
Turning on her heel, she stalked off. He stared after her, wondering why she seemed so angry. Maybe he should have asked for a scarf instead.
He followed her, and since her stride was much shorter than his, he caught up to her in four steps. She didn’t even glance in his direction.
They ambled along the sidewalk in silence for several minutes before he noticed a couple of teenage boys racing toward them. The kids shoved people out of the way as they ran, and Garrett rushed to shield Phoebe, not wanting her to be jostled.
