Riley

He had told himself that he wouldn’t let this get to him, but it was hard. He didn’t know what had come over him when he ripped into Jarrett. Maybe Jack was different, but the guy was still an alpha. His instincts alone should have bowed his head and shut his mouth. But after what Jack told him, it was like every word his grandmother ever said had flown from his mind, and words he didn’t recognize were spilling from his lips.

And the best part was, Riley didn’t regret any of it. Because to his surprise, Jarrett hadn’t threatened him to keep quiet. Hadn’t shown any of that alpha fury that he had expected. Instead, the man had looked like a scolded child. And after that, had shown complete approval toward Riley.

It had felt…good. It felt so good to be able to look Jarrett in the eye and speak his mind without fear of repercussion. It had felt even better to know that Jarrett had heard him. He knew he wouldn’t have had the courage to say anything if Jack hadn’t been by his side, though. He knew that his mate would never allow anyone to harm him.

Swallowing the lump in his throat, Riley watched as the wood gates opened. He gasped as Jarrett yanked him out of the way, as he was nearly knocked over by a blur of longer black hair. He could feel the anxiety rolling off of his mate in waves as Jack hesitantly returned the hug.

“I’m so sorry,” JJ said, voice wrecked.

Jack remained silent, unwilling to let his guard down. Riley couldn’t stand to see the conflict on his mate’s face and wanted nothing more than to pry the older brother off of him. Instead he looked at the pack that surrounded them. He had been told that people lived in villages and towns, all clumped together. Jack had told him all about his pack. But seeing so many people at once was almost overwhelming.

The fact that so many eyes were on him made him want to squirm. At the front of the crowd was a man who was obviously the pack alpha. The way he held himself showed his authority clearly. He watched his sons with complete relief that his youngest was safe, and maybe a hint of irritation underneath. His yellow eyes landed on Riley and the omega averted his gaze instantly.

Finally, Jarrett managed to separate his siblings, clapping Jack on the shoulder. Riley immediately pushed himself to his mate’s side, wrapping his arm around Jack’s waist. His heart was trying to beat out of his chest, and he tensed under the family’s scrutiny. Jack had an arm wrapped around his shoulder protectively.

John Senior stepped forward. “Good to have you back, son.”

As they made their way through the crowd, multiple people pushed forward to greet Jack. One giant of a man cuffed the side of his head while someone else who Riley assumed was his mate scolded Jack for worrying them. Jack grinned bashfully.
