CHAPTER 8

They got on their feet and steadied themselves, but before Beau managed to step ahead of him, Sawyer did the one thing he'd wanted to do earlier when they'd arrived but hadn't dared. He slid his hand into Beau's and they ambled hand in hand back to the truck.

"So, how about this weekend, you help me unpack the few last things I need help with, and we do some more wandering?" Beau suggested as Sawyer started up the engine.

"I work on Saturday until noon. But I'm free after. You can have me all weekend." He caught his words too late and got instantly flustered. "I mean—my help. You can have my help all weekend."

"God, you're freaking sexy when you get all tongue tied."

Sawyer's nerves knotted and he twisted to see Beau wearing an amused and kissable as hell grin.

"And that look you're giving me is why I call you Deputy Dimples. It knocks my socks off every damn time you flash it at me."

Beau forced his blushing cheeks to look away and out through the truck window before they didn't even make it out of the parking lot and gave into the raging hormones begging him to climb the man behind the wheel.

An anxious edge doused the flames pretty darn quick though.

Because as they drove along the darkened and foggy road, they happened to pass by a familiar looking luxury sedan pulled off a dirt driveway that led to who knew where. And Frederick Mason was standing outside the sedan as another darkened vehicle pulled up.

Sawyer and Beau held their breath and drove on by like they saw nothing and were nobody of importance. Chances are, Mr. Mason would have no idea who owned the truck, or happen to notice who was behind the wheel since their previous meeting had been brief.

But once a safe distance past, both Beau and Sawyer let out stiff breaths and when Sawyer pulled off into a pullout, Deputy Dimples had turned back into Deputy Benson.

"It's not me, right?" said Sawyer. "That was weird, right?"

"For sure weird. Normal people don't have meetings after dark like that. It had nefarious written all fucking over it."

"Shit. Dani's going to be so disappointed. Galen's going to freak."

"Question is, do we go tell them now, or sneak back and see what we can find out, first?"

Sawyer answered by shutting down the truck and getting out. He owed Dani and Galen his life. His brother's lives. No way he was going back without all the info he could wrangle up.

"Thank God for the fog," rattled Beau as they hurriedly snuck into the edge of the woods to get back to Mr. Mason. The fog definitely assisted in their cover.

Voices filtered into the trees and they knew they were close.

Beau held his arm up, motioning for Sawyer to stop.

He whispered an incantation and waved his arm around in front of them.

"It will keep our presence a secret."

"Wow. Super handy."

"In my line of work, no doubt."

But they approached quietly just the same.
