MICHAEL AND JESUS

Michael was eighteen years old when he found Jesus. Every Sunday all winter long, through spring and most of the summer while the people already saved were singing and praising and dancing in the glory of the Lord, Michael sat in back and waited until there He was one shiny day – large as life. When the preaching started up again and the topic turned to all of the ugly things that were against the will of God and anyone engaging in such vile activities was damned, Jesus got really uncomfortable and told Michael He was out of there and did Michael want to come too.

On the way back to Michael’s house, Jesus said He wouldn’t mind going off to live in the woods for a while, so they packed a bag. Change of pants. Warm shirt and jacket. Underwear. Matches. Pocketknife. Toothbrush. Four ham and cheese sandwiches and a pound of good butter. Michael wanted to bring along his hamster but Jesus didn’t think that was such a good idea since the woods were full of crows and owls and they might freak the little guy out, which made sense to Michael when he thought about it.

Michael went softly softly to his mother’s room to kiss her cheek goodbye and she moved a little in her sleep but didn’t wake. He took a small vial of perfume from her dresser to remember her by. Jesus said that Michael should probably write a note to tell his mother that he was fine and might come home someday, but he wasn’t sure and he hoped she’d keep thinking about him even when he’s not around, love Michael. And Jesus said might as well tape it up in the bathroom because that’s the first place she’ll go when she wakes up with that headache she got from last night, needing something to put it out with, and Michael said why don’t I just leave the note next to her bed with the aspirin and that way she won’t have to get up? Jesus said sure if you want to, but I think she’ll just go where she always does and not even see them there. It’s up to you. Michael thought more on that and decided Jesus was right, so he stuck the note on the mirror of the medicine cabinet.

It was a long way to the woods and Michael and Jesus had to hitch a ride for part of the trip. A woman in a blue truck stopped and asked how far they were going and Michael said we won’t know until we get there and the woman laughed a small laugh and said hop in. Jesus sat in the middle and Michael rode shotgun. The woman with the small laugh talked for a while and then plugged in a CD and they listened to Carrie Underwood who Michael saw once on TV. Jesus and Michael tapped their feet and Jesus sang along
