Andrew Volkov performed his custodialduties at St. Francis Medical Center diligently.Tonight, as he cleaned the floor outside the officesof the Department of Surgery, he moved slowly anddeliberately, making certain that his mop coveredevery inch of the corridor. Volkov was tall, but itwas hard to guess his height because he slouchedand shuffled as he worked. He rarely spoke andnever met the eye of anyone who spoke to him. Hisown eyes were gray-green, his hair was close-cropped and blond, and he had the broad cheek-bones, wide nose and brooding brow of a Slav.Volkov rarely showed any emotion, maintaining astolid expression that reinforced the impressionthat he was as much a mule as a man. When told todo something, he obeyed immediately. His superi-ors had learned quickly to be precise in theirinstructions because Volkov demonstrated littleimagination and followed orders literally.
The offices of the Department of Surgery were

quiet and deserted at two A.M. Volkov pushed hiscart against the wall and straightened slowly. Herested his mop against the wall, checked the corri-dor and shuffled toward the door to the next office. He opened it and turned on the light. The officewas narrow and not very deep, a windowless cubi-cle, really, hardly wider than a closet. A gunmetalgray desk took up most of the floor. It was coveredwith medical journals, textbooks, mail and miscel-lany. Volkov was under strict instructions never totouch anything on a doctor’s desk, but he was sup-posed to empty the wastebasket under the desk.
Volkov took a duster from his cart and ran it overthe shelves of a bookcase that stood against onewall. When he was through dusting, he lookeddown at the patch of floor that was not covered bythe desk, the bookshelves and the two visitor chairs. It was an area so small that it was hardly worthdealing with, but Volkov’s boss had instructed himto clean any surface that could be cleaned, soVolkov shuffled outside, emptied the wastebasket, then took his vacuum cleaner off the cart. Heplugged it in and ran it back and forth across thefloor. When he was satisfied that he had done all hecould do, Volkov placed the vacuum cleaner backon the cart.
Volkov reentered the office one last time. Heclosed and 'locked the door and drew a pair of latexgloves out of one pocket and a Ziploc bag out of theother. Then he stepped behind the desk and opened

the bottom drawer. The coffee mug was right wherehe had seen it on other nights. Volkov placed themug in the Ziploc bag, left the office and relockedthe door. He placed the bag under a pile of towelsalong with the gloves. Then he grabbed his mopand began pushing it slowly and deliberatelytoward the next office.
