Chapter Eight

King cursed himself the entire ride over to the mall. It would be crowded enough there for them to be safe and lose anyone that might have followed them. He hadn’t sensed a tail, but this was one of those things that he just couldn’t risk happening. He had too much to risk or possibly lose from being followed by that type of criminal.

He had never been a stranger to petty crime. He used to commit his fair share back in his day, but it wasn’t like that this time. Whatever those guys were into they had more resources and more reach than anything that he had ever done.

He thought about all of that. The mistakes of his past. The pain that it had brought him, and he suffered a little more from the consequences as he pulled into the mall. The biker was in a hurry, and he realized he probably wasn’t helping the man with him not panic. It was so easy to spread panic and fear, but he would have to try to fix that later when he explained exactly what he had put together while they were at his house.

Edwin pulled up beside him, stepping out of his car. The man looked worried and out of his depth. “What was that about?”

“I’m pretty sure that house was used for something other than some normal meth lab.” King shook his head. “Let’s get inside. We can get a cup of coffee and talk.”

Edwin nodded. “Sure. That sounds good.” He didn’t look like he believed it. “But you’ll tell me what you saw, right?”

“Once we’re inside the public place, yeah.” King grabbed his hand and dragged him into the building without another word. Soon they were sitting at a coffee shop, waiting for two cups of the steaming liquid to be made for them.

Edwin was watching his face. He had to be wondering what exactly was going on there. And Lloyd King was going to have to explain it to him. Except he didn’t know-how. Edwin waited, but he must have taken to long because eventually, the writer spoke. “What’s going on?”

Lloyd sighed heavily. “I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but I got a clue when the cop first talked to you.”

“What about that?”

“That’s not the way cops talk. The generalities, I guess.” He shrugged. “It gave me a bad feeling.”

“A feeling? Was that about a feeling.”

“No.” King steepled his fingers. “It’s not like that, not really. Sometimes a feeling is just a feeling, you know? I was all right with that, willing to let it slide. Maybe that guy was just new or whatever.”

“What do you think was happening there?” Edwin shook his head. “You aren’t making much sense.”

“I think it’s some sort of enterprise.” The biker looked down at his hands.

Their names were called. They got up and got the coffee then sat back down. Edwin took a sip. “Like a criminal enterprise?”

“Something bigger than just a single meth lab. Guys were going in and out of there, dragging stuff out.
