“You’re not doing this.”

“You bet your little ass I’m doing it.”

Liz’s pace increases as I take a turn and head straight to the library.

Her hand connects with my shoulder.

“Hey. Listen to me,” she says, panting.

I stop, spin around and catch her in my arms as she bumps into me and almost falls.

“Don’t go crazy over this,” she says, straightening.

A few people stare at us.

She grabs me by the elbow and drags me to the window. Bright sunlight pours through the glass.

“I told you that you needed to get laid before you get laid with either of these two men. You’re gonna have a heart attack because of them,” she says under her shaky breath.

“And that’s exactly what I’m doing.”

“No, you’re not. You’re trying to drag into this story some moron who has no idea what he’s getting into.”

“What is he getting into? It’s a party. He wanted to know my name which makes me believe that he was interested in me. I want to invite him to this club. I’m not promising him anything. What’s so bad about it? ”

“Nothing. Except that you use him as a prop. The same way you used the library to stage your photoshoot and pretend that you were someone else.”

“Well... It didn’t work, did it?”

Her mouth pulls open to retort. My hands fly up.

“Don’t even try it, Liz. If I’m ever gonna hear that lame excuse again that he didn’t get my pictures or didn’t see them, or his cat ate his phone, and that I can’t know for a fact that he purposely ignores me, I’m gonna break something. I haven’t heard from him since Monday. And it’s not as if we haven’t been through this before. Getting all warm and fuzzy before something happens and then he goes poof. If you think that I’m gonna buy your explanation again then you are wrong. So very wrong. The man must be getting some kind of twisted pleasure out of playing me like this.”

I pause and suck in a gulp of air.

“Do you like this man?” she asks.

I read worry on her face.

“Who are we talking about?”

“The one who drives you crazy.”

“I don’t know what I like,” I say with a different voice. “I didn’t even see his face.”

“Did you ask him to show it to you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I ponder for a moment.

“Because if I ask him then I have to show my face too, and I don’t want to.”

“Why?”

My body slackens, my knees turning soft.

Slowly, I lower myself on the window sill.

“Fear, I guess...” I mutter.

He eyebrows lift in utter surprise.

“Fear of what?”

I let out a soft huff.

“Reality.”

“And what’s the reality on planet Thea?”

“I don’t think I’m ready for anything. Not a nightstand, not a casual hookup and definitely not more than that. My emotions are all over the place. I don’t have patience. I’m not cool. Sometimes I’m desperate. Other times I’m standoffish. I can’t get ahold of myself. On the same token, I can’t pull away from this as well. I’m too restless when I try to.
