IN the weeks that followed, Vicki was strangely content. She seemed to have reached a period of calm in her married life for which she had scarcely dared to hope; and even if clouds did sometimes loom on the horizon, the sky immediately overhead was clear.

It was not exactly that Christopher changed very much. Vicki was beginning to find that one scene, however tense and moving, seldom changes a whole situation. Still less does it change a character.

There were even now days when Christopher’s curtness hurt badly, when she wondered if his impatient air meant that he resented her very presence. But, on the other hand, he never again said anything about distrusting her.

It was true that at times he could ignore her almost brutally, but to Vicki who loved him it was becoming obvious that he was sometimes the victim of a moodiness which made him suffer almost as much as she did. In any case, she would willingly have endured weeks of misery for the sake of the few times when, weary or dispirited, he would come to her, unmistakably for comfort.

He said once, with an oddly contented sigh, "I don’t know what it is about you, Vicki, but it’s restful just to put one’s head against you." She made no reply, but as she drew him close, she was touched to remember that Helge had expressed the same idea about her. “You’re the kind of woman a man likes to put his head against when he’s got a headache."

And if, as was usually the case, Christopher would be us brusque and impersonal as ever the next morning, Vicki felt she could bear that now for the sake of the other times.

Perhaps a little of her peace of mind owed its origin to the fact that Marie was now out of England. She was, the papers said, “winning fresh laurels " on the Continent. Vicki didn't care how many laurels she won, if only she would stay abroad.

Once, just after Christmas, Margery came in to see her, as she sometimes did, and the conversation veered round to Christopher.

“It's a funny thing, but I believe you've grown awfully fond of him, haven't you?" Margery asked.

“Well—yes. He's very lovable, you know." Vicki, spoke a little reluctantly.

“It's difficult to remember you have been married only four months."

Vicki nodded. “It seems like years sometimes," she admitted.

“How has it turned out really, Vicki?"

Vicki looked rather remote, as she could at times.

“Can't you see for yourself? We're—we're very happy, of course."

“Are you? All right. Only, I instinctively distrust a marriage where the woman is much more in love than the man."

“Margery!"

“Well, I don't see how it can be otherwise."

Vicki was quite silent with anger and more than a little alarmed. Margery could say the most beastly things quite calmly.

“Sorry, Vicki! It's not my business, of course. But—did Christopher ever find out—well, you know—that time?"

Vicki moved sharply. “I'm not going to discuss Christopher any more," she said firmly. “I—I'm quite happy and satisfied, and you needn't worry any more about me.
