Chapter Fourteen

Jax

He’d rounded the corner to his sister’s apartment building when he spotted it. The car he bought for Ayla glinting in the fading sunset, and a pair of women in the front seat embracing and talking.

So Sydney could contact Ayla but not him?

He waited until Sydney disappeared upstairs before pulling into the parking lot, and confronting Ayla.

“What the fuck?” he snapped when walked around her car, approaching the driver’s side and opening the door before she had the chance to get out.

“Jax,” she said in a low voice, looking up at him. “You need to be calm.”

“What’s going on? You’re friends with my little sister now?”

“Would that be a problem?” Ayla asked, raising a brow.

Maybe.

“No,” Jax said. “It’s only a problem when Sydney has time for social calls but no time to call me back and let me know that she’s alive. But she’s not the only one. You, too. You’ve been ignoring me all week long.”

“What are you talking about?”

Jax laughed. She was pretending she didn’t know what he was talking about? They both knew that they’d been doing a dance of avoidance all week long. But this time Ayla was the one who started it. Not him.

This woman drove him fucking insane. Sometimes in the best ways. Sometimes in the worst.

But it didn’t matter. One thing at time.

“So you were just hanging out,” Jax asked. “That’s it?”

Ayla bit her lip.

“What?” Jax asked. “Is there something else? Is she okay?”

“She’s fine, Jax,” Ayla replied. But her face didn’t look convincing. In fact, for the first time ever, Jax got the feeling that Ayla was lying to him.

“If she’s in trouble I need to know,” Jax growled. “She has a history, Ayla. I don’t know what she told you but she might actually need help if there’s something wrong. She’ll act like she’s got everything under control and she’s not addicted but - ”

“It’s not about her addiction,” Ayla said. “She’s sober, if that is what you’re worried about.”

“Then she’s in some other kind of trouble?” Jax asked.

Ayla still looked worried, her expression heavy and guarded.

“Can we go somewhere else, Jax?” Ayla asked, glancing up at Sydney’s apartment. “Before you make a scene?”

“So she’s done something I would make a scene over?”

Ayla sighed.

“Fine,” Jax said. “We’ll go somewhere else.”

He wasn’t sure why he was agreeing to this. Maybe just because if he didn’t leave soon, there was a very real possibility that he would tear Sydney’s door off its hinges and demand that she answer to the forty-five point interrogation that he’d been preparing during the drive out there.

And as angry as he was, he didn’t want to do that to her. Didn’t want to embarrass her in front of all of her neighbors and friends. The whole point of sending her out here, of doing anything he did for Sydney lately, was to try to give her some sort of semblance of normalcy. The normalcy that had been denied to him and Reid and Pierce. Sydney had been so young when things had changed for the better.
