Chapter Fourteen

For the tenth time, Clare glanced at the time on the radio's face before peering through the rearview mirror but not seeing any signs of her friend's vehicle. "Come on, Leigh," she muttered and dropped her head against the headrest. Twenty minutes had passed since she pulled into a parking spot at the chain restaurant. They were supposed to meet at three-fifteen, and it was now after three thirty. Clare's drive home to Chestertown was nearly two hours, and she had promised to be there by six or six thirty.

After a sigh, a low ding brought Clare's attention to the phone in her lap. Relief filled her when Leigh's name showed on the screen and the message promised that Leigh would be there in five minutes. True to her word, a familiar dark patrol unit pulled into the parking lot and took a space on the opposite side.

Jumping out of the Jeep, Clare smiled when they met halfway in front of the restaurant.

"Sorry I'm late. The traffic was so slow, and I was on the north end of town."

Clare chuckled and continued to the main entrance. "You mean the Wicomico Slow effect?"

Leigh pulled open the door and shook her head, staring oddly at Clare.

"It's a running joke between my friends." Clare felt Leigh on her heels. "Locals down here are so slow, like the Wicomico River. We call it the Wicomico Slow effect."

"I've heard of slower lower Maryland." They entered the short line to order food. "But what does Wicomico Slow mean?"

Smirking, Clare leaned and replied, "If you say Wicomico slowly, then it sounds like 'why can't we go.'" She raised an eyebrow and whispered, "Why can't we go slowly." She watched the amusement start in friend's features. "Therefore you just experienced the Wicomico Slow effect."

After a deep chuckle, Leigh shook her head and shifted her attention to the menu board.

Clare already knew what she was ordering, her favorite chicken quesadilla. She stole glances at Leigh, who was intimidating in her olive green pants and long-sleeve tan shirt with a black tie. But the most attention grabbing was Leigh's thick belt with different tools hooked to it, especially the holstered handgun. Clare was used to seeing Leigh in civilian attire and her hair down, instead of in a twisted neat bun.

"What you getting?"

"Quesadilla," Clare replied.

Leigh nudged Clare to go first when the cashier beckoned them forward. After ordering, they sat down at a table with drinks while waiting for their food.

"So what happened in class?"

Clare sighed and her shoulders fell forward, a frown creased her lips. "My friend, Leah Williams, cheated off me during the test."

"Which class?" Leigh sat rigid against the seat, arms crossed over her chest.

"Operations Management," Clare replied. "It's a core class for all business majors."

"Nice friend," Leigh muttered.

After a huff, Clare sipped her drink, then said, "I retook the test this morning before class."

"Thanks for doing that so early."

Clare smiled, knowing Leigh appreciated the time they had to meet before she drove home for the holiday.
