Chapter Fourteen

Thank the goddess that the enforcers were there, because they piled on top of the iron vampire, wrestled her to the ground, and encased her in a stream of magic that wrapped her tighter than Draco’s sarcophagus.

I staggered back into the hallway, but one of the enforcers hit me with a beam of magic that paralyzed my limbs. He levitated me off my feet with a warning that I was under arrest. Not that I was capable of moving anything but my eyes and mouth in this immobile state.

Moments later, they floated a scowling Draco from the vault. Our gazes locked, and he stared at me through stricken eyes. Relief whooshed out of my lungs with an outward breath. At least he hadn’t been bitten.

“What happened back there?” I asked him through our bond.

“She managed to sink her teeth into a female enforcer, who bit her colleague,” he said, his voice full of bitterness. “The only reason there were no other casualties was because the captain immobilized the entire room.”

“This is unbelievable,” I said.

Draco’s lips tightened. “They would have avoided getting infected if they had waited outside and hadn’t insisted on coming after me.”

The vault door slammed open, and Captain Zella stepped out, pointing a remote at the leather chest containing the iron vampire. Her wails filled the corridors with vibrations of anguish that penetrated me to the marrow. I shuddered, my eyes filling with tears.

Another pair of enforcers stepped out, floating their infected colleagues, followed by a third who held Vania, complete with his soul stone, in her gloved hand.

The teller appeared from the other side of the door and shut it with a click, then he rushed ahead of the procession to lead us out.

We all continued down the hallway in single file, with the enforcer floating Draco several paces ahead. Between us was the one holding Vania’s stone. He flickered in the dim light until we reached the door that led to the wider hallway, which colored him a sickly shade of green.

“How could you lock another person in a trunk for over a hundred years?” I asked the dead warden.

He raised his chin. “You have no idea what it was like to toil under a taskmaster like my father. The team I led was on its last warning. If we didn’t defeat the iron vampire and stop the spread of her madness, he would throw us all on the pyre and assign the work to more capable subordinates.”

I stared at Draco’s back, not bothering to ask if it was true. The man who had watched his mother slaughtered so mindlessly by his father only to fight to stay alive in a child death camp could be capable of anything.

My gaze wandered back to Vania’s. “Why didn’t you just kill the iron vampire and put her out of her misery?”

He shook his head. “We stabbed her, burned her, threw her into acid, but she wouldn’t stop wailing. The only way to stop her was to encase her in a magically sealed trunk and dumping her remains in a secure vault.
