CHAPTER TWENTY

DICE

“Look, I’m not sure where you’re taking me, but yesterday you said we were going to find Piper, and today I feel like you’re yanking my chain. Was that really her on the phone or just someone who sounded like her?”

Yesterday with Kylian in the diner was suspect, but today was even more so. He’d gotten me on a flight from Boston to New York. The flight was an awkward one for me and a silent one for him. I’d fidgeted the whole time while he pretended to sleep. He stopped in front of a thick metal gate that reminded me of something you’d see on the front of a castle. It stood at the center of a gothic-looking brick building. There were no windows and only the single door. On the corners in the front, it looked like a tower stood at each point.

The sounds of New York surrounded us, and I didn’t know why, but I found comfort in all the noise: the beeping horns, the racing cars, the loud music and sounds of people coming and going. The street was lined with cars and the smell of restaurants down the street. Everything about it was familiar. I knew where I was and how to get home if I had to. I knew there were ways for me to get where I felt more comfortable. It was all so fishy, and my red flags were waving.

“You should just trust me.”

“Yeah, I’m sure that’s what Dahmer said to his victims before he munched on their parts.” I glanced around the street, making sure I was in view of other people.

Kylian’s head snapped around and his crystal-green eyes met mine. “You think I’m going to kill you . . . then eat you?”

I crossed my arms. “You never know with you people.”

“You people?” His brow furrowed.

“Yes, you know . . . the good-looking guys who can’t be trusted.”

He chuckled and strands of his inky hair fell over the side of his face. “Don’t know if I like being considered a you people.”

I shrugged. “I’m sure you’ve been considered worse.”

“I’m sure I have.” He pulled his cell phone from his pocket and held it to his ear. It barely rang once when a voice came from the other end. Then Kylian responded, “Yeah. You got it?”

There was a moment of pause, then he nodded. “I’m outside. Nah, I’m not coming in. I can’t bring a normal behind those walls. Yeah, see you in a second.”

He hung up and slid the phone back into his pocket.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “What’s a normal?”

“You are.”

I didn’t know why, but that sounded like it should be offensive. “Oh.”

“Relax. It’s not a bad thing . . . you’re just you.”

“Why does that sound like an insult?”

Before he could answer, the front gate creaked open and a tiny person in an oversized hoodie and holding a big pillow popped out. Kylian smiled down at the person, and when she pulled her hood back, I froze for a second.
